How long did your doctor recommend you wear the TED hose for? I'd love to hear everyone's experience on this. Thanks!

I think it was 4-6 weeks with my first knee and I didn’t use them at all with the second!

@Alibry I wore mine for less than 2 weeks.

Have you had your TKR yet? If so, please give us the date so we can make a signature for you.

My Dr wanted me to wear them a full six weeks and wouldn't budge an bit on that time. The ones from the surgery are miserable, hot and itchy. I have since bought a couple nice pair on line ... from Doc Miller brand, and they are very comfortable. In fact, I still wear them when my swelling is up and my leg is tired.

When I have my second knee done, I will put these more comfortable compression socks on right away.

@Alibry I was told that I did not need to wear them after my TKR -- even though the same surgeon made me wear them for 2 weeks after my hip replacement.

That said, please don't compare yourself with others. Listen to your surgeon/surgical team -- they know what your personal situation and health risks are and will advise you accordingly.

When is your surgery?

@alibr, I just had my one week post op with my surgeon and he wants me to wear the TED on my surgery leg for a month
He also has me taking aspirin. I'm not at high risk for clots.

Wore them for 6 weeks after THR. Also MD had me on aspirin. They said the TEDS were for swelling and they really helped, along with the ice and constant elevation.

Hello And Welcome to BoneSmart and recovery. Congrats on your new knee!
Thanks for you surgery date. Was it your Right, or Left knee? Please let us know and we'll add that bit of info too the signature we created for you.

You're almost one month post op already. I hope your recovery is going well. I will leave our Recovery Guidelines as much of the info may still be useful to you.
Best Wishes and thanks for joining us!

KNEE RECOVERY GUIDELINES

As you begin healing, please keep in mind that each recovery is unique. While the BoneSmart philosophy successfully works for many, there will be exceptions. Between the recommendations found here, your surgeon's recovery protocol and any physical therapy you may engage in, the key is to find what works best for you.

1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary.

2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery. While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.
