My wife had both knees done about 18 months ago. One of the knees is still warm much of the time and after some activity is almost hot. This does not seem right. Any insights are appreciated.

Welcome artframer, what a lovely hubby you must be to look us up for her. Get her to join too. I can't offer advice myself on this matter as I am just 12 weeks today, but hang in there as I am sure Josephine our moderator will be around soon to help. Sue

Hi art. I'm only 2 weeks so hot knees are normal for me. Do they hurt her? I know early like I am it is normal but not sure for how long. And why is it happening whatever stage you are at? JO?

Hi Art,
I'm Cathy at 12 weeks today and can't help you other than my knee is warm all the time and hot if I do much activity like physical therapy.
You're a nice husband for checking us out tell your wife about us and drop by any time.

This is not a medical comment but one of engineering/physics. If one considers just the thermal conduction properties of bone vs titanium/cobalt.... Your bodies core temp is 98.6F but your skin temp is about 91. Normally you have these nice layers of meat and bone which don't conduct heat to readily to allow this to happen. Now you put this hunk of metal in your knee which connects the middle of the knee which should be 98
and to just below the skin. Hence the skin above the metal should probably be warmer than you are used to. Just a wild guess.

The logic is there. I just wonder if that is the actual reason. There was a significant difference in the heat from my knees this past weekend after walking a number of miles.

I'm having trouble with that vision..Of course those of us who have rode motors and touched the exhaust pipe have had the old "hot leg".

You know, I have been wondering about that same thing in reverse....like if you are outside for a while in really cold weather, will the cold transfer into the metal that is right below the skin and down into the center of your bone.....that gives me the creeps. I've been in the cold for short periods and certainly didnt' notice any discomfort, but I was wondering. Maybe having warm surrounding tissue takes care of any cooling. Josephine, do you know anything about this?

When I touch my two knees in comparison, my new knee is just a teeny tiny bit warmer. I'm with Gat, we all just have HOT legs, looking that is!!!!!

O.K. raise your hand if you have tried to see if a refrigerator magnet sticks to your knee!!! Don't lie.

I hadn't even thought of trying that until you mentioned it. Didn't work.....Too bad cause that would have been quite a lot of fun!

I'm thinking about gluing a grease fitting to my knee and telling people you have to put a squirt of WD40 in once a month.

Now THAT would be a fun way to freak people out!!! You're twisted, Doug.

I can't help myself...It just comes out.

I don't remember my knee being warmer than the other at all but that was 2 years ago so maybe it was. As for the cold temps bothering it, it does feel funny inside my knee when I have been out in very cold temps for awhile like we have in MN. I haven't tried a magnet but when I had to go through a metal detector last fall it didn't go off like I thought it would.
