I am curious if other folks are checking the rating of the hospitals they are having procedures performed in? If so how do you feel about the rating and did it affect your decision to go to that facility?
The reason for my question is I was about to have a surgery at a hospital until I found out it had a poor rating from three different services! BCBS gave it three stars out of possible ten, Dept of Health & Human Services also ranked it one star out of five, and HealthGrades.com gave it a poor rating period! There were high rates of complications, infections, and an assortment of issues I did not like. So have others checked these ratings or have I just lost all my marbles??? Do they have rating systems in other countries? All my experience is here in the US and the ratings I am speaking of are in the states for all the international posters..

Assuming you think the reviews are reliable, I'd scoot! No doubt about it.

You are right on target about checking out the hospitals. I did the same thing as in Vermont most of the hospitals are on the small size (under 50 beds). I also checked our Department of Health website to see how many TKA each hospital did.

Any hospital with low ratings from those 3 organizations is certainly one to avoid.

Good luck on finding a good hospital. I have found that you will also find that the better surgeons will not be operating at those hospitals.

PS I also checked out the doctors as far as board certification, disciplinary actions etc.

Gloucester... thanks for the suggestion about checking the hospital. I'm in SoCal and my OS uses Cedars Sinai Medical Center. They're ranked right up there at the top. I knew already that my OS was great. Now I know the hospital is, too!

I didn't think about checking the ratings. I felt comfy with past experiences we had there. I was also fairly linited. We have 4 local hospitals - one close to my hone my OS doesn't work out of and in all honesty we refer to it as a chop shop. A second is primarily for Alaskan Natives - which also has some questionable outcomes. The remaining two are within 3 miles of eachother and the OS I have works out of both. I chose the one that his office is in and that we have worked out of - All turned out well and I would highly recommend it to others.

Hi Glausterman. If you are worried about that type of thing you will have to travel as I have! I am about to have a Tkr at the Hospital for special surgery in New York City. If you check there rankings you will be pleased I was and that is why I am headed there. Make no mistake it would have been cheaper and whole lot easier to have this done in my back yard but I was looking for something that would get me back to normal quickly and last for a long time. And that is exactly what my surgeon has promised. My only hope is that he is a man of his word.....

Hello Gloucesterman,

After calling on hospitals as a medical industry professional, I have definite opinions regarding ratings. Complications and Infections are biggies.

Both can be related to poor quality control. A hospital is a team. If it ain't clean, if the staffing is poor, and attitudes stink, you get the kind of red flags you mentioned in your post.

You are dealing with a complication and redo so, I'd go where I could with the best ratings possible. You want the deck stacked in your favor.

Good luck, Tom

BIG THANK YOU to all that replied! Presently I am hoping & praying my wife and I will make the right decision in the near future regarding my knee issues. Sometimes I feel like I am totally frustrated by a system which does not appear to give the patient enough information to make the correct choices. So Monday she and I will meet another new surgeon and see what he has to say. Of course we believed in the first guy that did the Oxford which only lasted six months.

Couldn't have put it better, Tom. Trouble with a lot of hospitals is they are rudderless ships. No captains.

Now in MY young day .....
