Revision THR Hope for 2020, Revised THR

Aww, thank you sweet @SarahBee We are just home. Very long day, but cautiously hopeful. Very much appreciate your prayers and thoughts.

Revision Appointment

We met with our revision specialist today. Really liked him. Great bedside manner and incredibly bright. He said stem was clearly off and has been since September X-ray. The surgery may not be as straight forward as we had hoped. The stem used was a Pennacle. While not cemented, it is a surface that attracts bone growth. Best case scenario it removes easily. He noted there is also large LLD and was surprised at the large cup size used. His feeling is that our goal is hip stability with the greatest range of motion possible. Tentatively scheduled for 12/27 for full revision. Maybe earlier if someone gets canceled. ORs are all booked and so is he. He will use existing scar, although does most from front.

Recovery should be more straight forward. He does not like walkers for more than a couple weeks. Left with crutches until surgery. All pre operation bloodwork and tests were done today. Surgery at Virginia Hospital Center.

Thank you Hipster Family. I was armed with questions and felt they were all answered. ❤️

Lots of good news, Sarah. You like the revision surgeon and his bedside manner. You found him to be bright. You don't have to wait too much longer to finally remedy this complication. It's evident you trust the OS and your're comfortable with him revising your THR so you're finally able to move forward. And it's awesome you already had your pre-op bloodwork and tests completed today as it's one less thing to be concerned with during this already crazy busy time of year. All sounds encouraging! I'll bet it's a big relief to finally have answers and a plan. First big steps toward a happy, healthy New Year! We'll walk with you every step of the way.
Big hug sent your way :)
@Fit4Family

Sarah, that's great news. And even though the revision is not straightforward I like it that the surgeon has a clear grasp of what the problem is and that he communicated clearly. That was essential when it came to choosing my surgeon (not the first one Kaiser sent me to). Good news too thst you won't have anymore scars.

Thank you @Layla Yes, we are grateful to have a plan and to have the decision behind us. You could almost see his mind working as he studied all the images. It is a lot to take in, this body has been scanned. Lol.

Love this site and all of my hipster pals here. I felt very well armed to discuss it all with him. Big hug, right back to you.

Happy that you will be leaving your problem hip behind in 2019, Sarah @Fit4Family . A new hip for a new year/decade. It sounds like you have found a good surgeon, who communicates well and could easily discuss what you might expect.

Wishing you a joyful and blessed holiday season :plugging-in-xmas-tree-smiley-emoticon:and a most wonderful :happy-new-year-smiley-emoticon-4:

So happy that the visit with the surgeon went well, that you like him and he's very bright. I like the self assured but not arrogant! All your pre-op bloodwork and tests knocked out, you're on your way! Wishing you the brightest, healthiest and happiest holiday season!

Oh good! It sounds like a very good consultation. I am so thrilled for you that you found him to be quite intelligent and engaging. We had this same experience last winter when we found out my husband needed open heart surgery. The surgeon was literally assessing and strategizing there in the room with us. I found it very reassuring.
I am right there with Laya in wanting to hug you and assure you that we will be here with you through this. You are the true picture of grace under pressure. :friends:

Then I loved what Sarahbee pointed out, that this will be resolved before the New Year, I like the thought of that.

Rest well tonight, you have accomplished a lot in the past few days. ((hugs))

Ahhhh. Answers, validation, and a date to get on with life. Good news and sounds like a good doctor. Lots to think about and lots to do on a few fronts. Hopefully that helps the time go by more quickly. May you have peace through the days ahead. You know we’ll be here with you every hobbling step. XO ❤️

Hello All,

Went to bed crazy early last night and now up in the wee hours tree gazing. I will head back soon, just wanted to thank you for your virtual hugs, kindness and encouragement. @CricketHip @SarahBee @Elf1 @Hip4life

My mind was racing as soon as I opened my eyes. Holidays and all the discussion of possible outcomes. Oh my. :dubious: So, I am especially glad to see the smartest hipsters I know feel good about the next steps.

I do feel very hopeful that the :new-year-toast-smiley-emoticon: is finally looking more promising.

Grateful that this busy time of year will help the next three weeks fly by. I only have EKG left with primary care sign off Wednesday.

Back to snooze.

Great to hear this and you clicked with the OS straightaway. He sounds an improvement on the previous one. Fingers crossed for you and we will all be cheering you on. Did the OS say whether you are having a GA or a spinal?
Re the recliner. I am 5’8” and long in the body.

I managed in my father in laws old upright chairwith a footstool, binge watched Mad men and the Crown, had friends visiting every few days and snoozed on a cheap day bed I bought specifically for the purpose when I got tired. . I didn’t move upstairs again for six weeks! That room became my sanctuary for recovery and was conveniently near the kitchen. Hubby would hear me tap tapping across the floor to raid the ginger biscuits at 4am!

Hi @Fit4Family
I'm very glad your surgery is scheduled before the new year so your brain doesn't have to marinate in all the suspense.
I'm glad you found a confident surgeon you can have faith in and who wants to get this sorted.
Hope the rest of your week is Sweet.

Good Morning Friend.jpeg Sweet Sarah, it seems like you had a very positive meeting with the new Surgeon.

It is SO frustrating when your problem showed up in September! This is what happened to me ... two lots of X-Rays at the SNS hospital on 13 October and again on 9 November, was told all okay, given pain medication. Private X-Ray on 2 February 2019 showed problem. 20 February consultation with original Surgeon who would do Revision. 12 March car accident going to hospital for pre-ops, taken to one hospital, X-Rays, transferred to original hospital. After 9 days told op would be mid April or later so on 21 March so transferred to Private Hospital. That was six months of hell before progress began, during which time I was bedbund,

Sorry, this is not about me but I was trying to say I empathise the frustration of knowing something is drastically wrong and medical experts don't see it.

I think you are now beginning your road to recovery, my sweet thing, and I am so happy for you and will be with you all along the way.

Have a peaceful week.

Thank you @Mojo333 @SurreyGirl @Izabel

Yes my mind was ”marinating” Mojo. What an accurate description. I will move today to other thoughts I‘m sure like recovery space. Got a kick out of your description of tap tapping across the floor for ginger biscuits SurreyGirl.
Why is 4 am the waking hour? Was for me as well.

Completely forgot to ask about GA or spinal will ask his scheduler today. Let’s hope I hang on to my voice this go around. Ah yes, memories are coming back. More “marinating“ for me today. Lol.

Thank you for your sweet wishes Izzy. Really appreciate it. ❤️

You are doing this thing as well as one could expect, my friend...one day at a time.
Think positive, read positive...fake it until you make it has always been my motto.
Hugs for a good day.

Oh, dear, @Fit4Family, just caught up on your thread and learned about the need for a revision. I am so sorry it's necessary, although I know you will get through it successfully, heal and life will be looking up for you next year. I agree with others--take it one day at a time and keep moving forward. Although the need for revision surgery is, I'm sure, a real shock, at least you now have an answer to why things weren't healing the way they should have been and your continued pain. I hope you are able to press your family and friends into doing all of the holiday stuff, while you rest and relax, and prepare yourself for surgery on the 27th. Sounds like you have faith in your surgeon, and you will be in good hands. We'll all be thinking of you, I hope you know that, and here's to better days ahead and a real and permanent fix to this hip problem you've endured for so many years. You hang in there, my dear--sending lots of cyber hugs and good wishes today.

I just stopped by to leave you a hug and a smile! I fully believe this will be your answer this time.
:roseshwr:

Thank you sweet friends. Dancing penguin :happyfeet:totally cracked me up.

Hello @Barbaraj Thank you for the hugs and best wishes. Best part about it is there is no doubt it’s a redo. Don’t have to weigh pros and cons. Actually feeling ahead of game on holiday things. 90% of my gifts are wrapped. Skipping cards, and ordering take out when at all possible. Not going to worry about it being perfect this year. Tree is up and gorgeous! Hope you are feeling better. xxx

Thank you for the hugs @CricketHip I like your thinking. I sure hope we get her done this time. Fingers and toes crossed.

I sure hope he is fantastic @Bfam85 Really felt comfortable with him. Very humble and skilled. Thank you for your vote of confidence. ❤️

Oh how beautiful!
The star, the soft glow of the lights, the reflection in the pretty arched window. I love watching tv at night by the light of the tree in the weeks leading up to Christmas. It feels peaceful and relaxing. I hope you find contentment in doing so too.
All is calm, all is bright, all is going to be alright. I truly believe that.
Big hugs, sweet Sarah.
