Seems like I got a combination of Kim's hot knee and Mark's clunking one. The first time I moved the left knee after surgery, it popped really loud. Scared Rick and me. Dr. K says it isn't a problem, just gas build up causing all the noise.

The first day was a doozy! My body doesn't like morphine very much. Maybe because my femoral and spinal block both wore off within 3 hours and they didn't get the pca pump set up soon enough. By the time they got it hooked up and functioning correctly (in 2 hours only received 2 mg of morphine), my pain levels were through the roof. I was also expereincing severe muscle spasms, which Dr. K wouldn't address. He was being very cautious and stingy with the pain meds due to my last time coding on Delaudid. Seems I was hitting the button every 22 minutes (20 minutes is the minimum time) and still didn't get good relief until we went to 10 mg of percoset every four hours by mouth. Once that was started, I was doing better. Was able to walk the halls and sit up in the recliner for 4 hours at a time. Tolerated the cpm well to...as long as the pain meds were in place. Able to get to 80 on cpm comfortably.

Talked the nurse into letting me wash my hair in the shower while sitting with my legs outside. A bit messy, but successful. Couldn't stand the glued hair anymore and wasn't willing to chance having to go one week like last time to wash my hair. I seemed to have the sauna room at the hospital. Ran a fever upwards to 102 for the first two days. Fever broke Thursday morning and stayed under 100 the rest of the time.

The ride home was an adventure in perseverance and how much pain I could tolerate. Sat in backseat of van and rolled around a bit. Rick seemed to find the hills to drive home. It has been a comedy of errors and would actually be funny if it didn't hurt so much. Didn't remember the front walk being so long and bumpy (it's natural stone). Just getting in and out of van was a feat in itself. The last time I had a friend who brought me home in her 4 wheel drive and drove me over the curb to the front door.

The CPM technician was waiting for us and wanted to get me set up. Although I had already spent 2 1/2 hours on it this morning, I agreed. Only problem was Rick was running errands and Sara was doing laundry...thinking it was okay to let me rest while on the CPM. Almost 4 hours later, when I awoke since I had risen at 3:15 am and was exhausted, I could hardly move and really had to go potty! Of course, had not taken my pain medication since Rick was still running errands, so was excruitiating! Getting back to bed was tough. The nurses had it down pack, but unfortunately my family was a bit rusty. Tried playing wishbone with both legs. I shouldn't have...and I regret it, because I screamed 'Why are you trying to torture me!" Definitely not what to say to your daughter and spouse who are trying so hard, yet failing miserably. Made them feel horrible.

Finally got settled with knee wedge and ice for a period of reprieve until 'Bailey aka momma cat' decided to join me on the bed. Yep, I can now say my new knee is a bullseye. She jumped directly on the new joint and when I screamed, scaring her and everyone else in the house, she jumped straight up and back down on said offensive knee, causing severe pain, while knocking the knee off the wedge and causing bleeding at the staples. I now have a paw print on the inside of the knee to testify to my afternoon.

Just finished cleaning the wound and getting the dried blood and oozing under control. Fun, fun!

Hopefully it will be uneventful from here on out. Grandsons are still home and two teens with Rick. All else are farmed out. Boys should be gone, but Nick is working and his x doesn't think she needs to come until tomorrow. Says she is in pain and sick and can't get him today. :hissy: As for Terence...his parents are in their own world and don't think of anyone but themselves. Mom is traveling and not around. Tony got paid today and haven't heard from him. So disappointing, but that's life.

All in all this has gone much better. Am getting around okay as long as I have my pain medication. He dropped it to 7.5 oxycodone saying my pain should decrease. Obviously, he has never had this procedure done.

Enough whining. Just wanted to give an update. Sorry it's so lengthy. Rick's cell phone was hard to figure out. Ended up posting the same thing twice. Glad to be home with laptop, Breyers Butter Pecan Ice Cream and my own bed! There's no place like home.

Blessings,

Oh...Rose...I could hardly stop laughing as I read you post about the cat...sounds like something that would happen at my house. :rotfl:

So glad you are home and are doing reasonably well. You know the ropes...RICE and DRUGS. Take care of yourself

Ohhh Rose,
You have had quite the home comming!!! I would have given anything to have seen you and 'Bailey aka momma cat' do your screaming flying HELLO dance!!! She missed you so much I am sure. But dasng why do pet always jump on whatever it is that hurts????
I am so happy you are home!!!!! I was really starting to worry when you posted only once. I was so scared that you were going through a bad patch like last time. I am just thank God for bring you home!!!

Rose,
So good to hear you are home! What a home coming you have had. Oh my gosh, the way you tell your stories...I'm in stitches. It's funny but it's not...you know what I mean. I had a similiar problem with my cat when I got home. She likes to walk up and down my legs...used to feel good...not now! Take care and get plenty of rest...ICE ICE ICE!

Ice cream and a laptop, ....you are set! So funny about the cat. Hope you get well really fast!

Pat

Rose, so glad you are home and starting the mending process. Things will level out I'm sure. And one day that horrific homecoming will make such a great story to tell. I winced and laughed at the same time when reading about it all. You are such a trooper!!! A real inspiration to us all. Hang in there and don't hesitate to ask for help from that hubby and family of yours.

Rose
Congrats on the second knee. Bet your glad you only have 2. Your homecoming sounds like what would happen to me. My spine doc sounds like yours with the meds. I swear he puts down the scalpel and thinks the pain should be gone. I've already talked to him about that for my upcoming surgery.
Glad you got out of the hospital,it is always better at home. The cat story is priceless too.
Ice, pain meds, stool softeners, sleep repeat

Hi Rose!
I'm relatively new to the boards, but just had to comment on your homecoming narrative...I too, laughed, but winced over some of the details. I guess, it's because we've all had our own version of your homecoming, (cat, not withstanding) and it is such a journey to come home but so very worth it. Butter pecan ice cream and a laptop...sounds like just the right pain medicine!

Seriously, I'm so happy that your surgery went well, and you got your hair washed (I'm so like that...when my hair is dirty, I feel dirty all over and so so ugly) and that your pain is under control and you are now on the road to recovery and life will be wonderful not too far off!

Rest well!

Boy Rose!!! Your story sounds like a movie script.....you couldn't make that stuff up!!! The important thing is that YOU DID IT! And have a paw print to prove it! RICE and veg out on DRUGS!!! You deserve it! OH and remember those lovely stool softeners! Welcome home!!! ((;0)

Rose--I've been thinking of you. Wow--what a story. Hope that things settle down a little---I laughed and winced when you wrote about your cat. Our huge fat black cat has spent lots of time walking on my surgery leg and seems very attracted to my left knee-sleeps next to it---NEVER did that before.

Hope that you can get a little rest--your household always seems so BUSY. Please take care of yourself. Butter Pecan ice cream certainly hits the spot--for me too!!!! Warm regards. Nancy

Rose, I am so glad that you are over the worst of it and at home. I had a similar story with pain meds in the hospital--I think I am going to be a day surgery patient if there ever is a next time, I don't think I can take two days of the hospital!!

Gotta keep those animals away from you--don't trip over the darn things on your way to the bathroom. Their little furry bodies are a comfort--but too many people have tripped over pets on this website!! Good luck with your healing and hopefully each day will be a better one!! Kelly

Rose--that was really well written! I was cringing while I laughed. The cat story really had me going--my cat, Sebastian, did exactly the same thing. I swear he was aiming! Good luck with your recovery from this second adventure. Even though I am still tired much of the time, I can truly say having the second knee done was a very good thing.

Rose
So glad you are at home and on the road to a smooth recovery.

But do keep the momma cat at bay. As said by someone in one of the post, so many animals have caused some problems to others.

Bet those kittens are cute as can be. Be Careful and don't trip over one.

Strange how everyone remarks on 'the cat'. My daughter Sara told me she felt left out and a little hurt that I only told the bad parts. She was really devasted that she caused me pain. Her and Rick are working hard to help and doing so much better.

Yesterday had many milestones. Nurse came and everything looked great, blood pressure was a little elevated due to issue with oldest son, but Rick took over and dealt with it quickly. He wanted to stay here with Terence (the 5 year old WILD grandson). Rick made a few calls and had Terence wisked away against Tony's ranting. If he wouldn't take him, Rick took care of it! YEAH Rick!

Had first home pt with my old therapist Mark. He was actually smiling the whole time. I think I surprised him with what I could do. Was able to get in and out of bed alone using stretch strap and right leg under to assist. Did 10 leg raises unassisted. Was able to do kicks. Passed strength test in both legs. Measures above 80 degrees flex in left knee and over 90 something in right. :wahey::wahey: Walked around the house with walker. Rocked in glider and did everything he asked me to do. He congratulated me on the quad prep. Told me I had done an excellent job preparing for this surgery and I am way ahead of where he expected me to be. Looks like all that hard grunge work has paid off and he thinks I should be able to accomplish 90 in the next few weeks!!! Said the major swelling takes place between day 5-10, so it's important to get good ROM before it sets in. Hoping to keep it under control with pain meds every 4 hours, RICE and good balance of exercise.

Thankfully I have today off. I spent a good part of yesterday sleeping after pt. Am also sleeping much better and for longer periods of time this second go round. Like a whole different surgery, with the exception of the pain. That is very familiar! :shk: Learning to pace myself and not having any trouble putting myself first. I know in the end it will benefit everyone for me to be more aware of what it takes and demand things happen as my body dictates.

Meds have me pretty emotional and I tend to cry and express my feelings to the detrament of my family. Having a hard time not hurting their feelings. Need to work harder on that. I don't mean to make them feel bad, just happens. This morning, Rachel (15) was helping me get back in bed as I'm super stiff after sleeping, before CPM. I asked her to hurry and get the left foot on the bed. She just stood there glaring at me for a few seconds too long until I yelled "PUT IT IN THE BED NOW!" She dropped it like a hot potatoe. I asked her if she was trying to hurt me because she was angry and she just looked at me and touched my hand. I felt terrible, but needed to let her know what she did really hurt, not helped. Will have to strive to develop a better level of communication with her since Sara is leaving for Ireland tomorrow and she will be my second helper besides Rick. Jeepers, so much to accomplish. Guess the Lords not finished with me yet!

I sent them off to church. Son Nick is my guardian. He is sleeping on the floor next to my bed. He's afraid if he gets in my bed, he might hurt me. I'm on the CPM working it slowly up to a greater bend. Am shooting for 85 this morning. Just taking it 5 degrees at a time to work out the kinks!

This has been a long enough entry. Sorry, you guys are keeping me company while the house is quiet. Even the cats are sleeping. Thankfully not with me. :hehe:

Rose, you keep going with the long entries, they are great to read. I'm so pleased you are home and doing brilliantly by the sound of it. I have a little pomeranian who is going to be so pleased to see me after my upcoming operation, thankfully shes nearly 13 and cant lope about too much, but even if I go to the bathroom you'd think i've been gone a week when I come out. She too has arthritis, bless her it's sad to see her struggling. Anyway, just wanted to say keep up the good work, you are inspiring. :thmb:

Hey Rose,
So happy to hear you are home and doing well. And I am honored your clunking along, hahaha. I also love your detailed stories please keep posting .I wish you the very best in a speedy and safe recovery.

Ps,.warn that cat your thinking about getting a puppy.:hehe:

Funny, Mark!!!

Rose, hon....you are doing a great job putting yourself first. I'm proud of you. It's not easy when you have so many people around to deal with (and cats! - yikes!!). But you are strong and you're doin' it!! God bless you!

Don't ever hesitate to write all you want here. That's what we're here for. And, besides....your stories are priceless. I always enjoy reading your posts. Don't stop!!!

Just be sure and come here any time you need to vent or you need a little extra support. That family of yours loves you very much - that is so evident. But sometimes (as you know) they just don't understand what you are going through and they want you back to normal - like NOW! We get it....and we're here for you.

Rose I love reading your stories as well. They are never too long, keep it up when you can.
I'm so glad your doing so well with this knee. Keep up the good work. Keep yourself first.

I'm with the others. Long posts like that are interesting as well as entertaining. You should write professionally!

This one won't be too long....

Had another great day with pt on Monday. Still making my tough guy pt smile. :thmb: Have increased CPM up to 90, but struggling sometimes. I don't like this particular model and am requesting a replacement. It isn't smooth and has some sharp edges that are uncomfortable.

Ending up taking first car ride to massage therapist on Tuesday to get some relieve from muscle spasms. Right leg has improved signifacantly. It is even responding better since surgery. Roxanne thinks my healing was held back by the bad left leg. We are both impressed with how well RTKR is doing.

Left one has been a booger though. I have been having spasms in the lower leg below the calf. It is strung too taut. She worked it hard though and was able to loosen it some, but not completely. Also quads have been waking me around 5 am with a jolt and knees locking. :shk: Not a fun way to wake up!

One more concern is a knot that has developed in my upper left thigh since my surgery. My massage therapist and I both noticed it. It's not really painful, like a blood clot would be, just there and a nuisance. I mentioned it to my nurse today and to my OS office when they called with med changes for blood thinner. Dr. K will call Wed am and let me know if I should come in and get it checked out. I will also let my pt Mark check it out tomorrow when he comes and get another opinion.

Been pretty wiped out in the beginning stages of this recovery period, so not getting on too much. Will post when I hear something more.

Blessings,
