Revision TKR Hmm. Not thrilled with the revision yet

Thanks so much for the responses. That helps so much. I actually did take the time to go back through your entire recovery thread last night to get a better feel for your entire experience. That, and your explanations above give a clear picture of what has happened.

You have a clear picture of how an uncemented prosthesis works and, you're right, it was just the word "glue" that got me off track. The uncemented implant has special porous coating that allow for the bone to grow into it to secure the implant in place. This type of implant has proven to be just as good as the cemented verision (sometimes even a tad better) in clinical trials. But, there are cases where the bone growth just doesn't take place properly which sounds like what you may be experiencing. In those cases, a cemented prosthesis can get the job done.

Just a thought. Since I go to the doctor by myself or even with another person, I ask the physician if he/she minds if I record my visit as I'm sometime so busy taking notes, I may lose something that was said. I tell physician that my auditory skills are weak (which is true at my age) and I've never had anyone refuse.. This can easily be done on your Smartphone. I then go home and listen to it a couple of times and sometimes find things I may have missed.

What a fantastic idea Calgirl. I usually write down my questions but I put them down when the physician is in the room. I've found I'm too busy focusing on my questions and not on his answers. A recording, brilliant idea.

What a shock. The surgeon called today to "see how you are doing?" He also wanted to go over all of the blood work that has been done. All of it is, in his words, beautiful. He encouraged me to take it easy and be off the leg as much as possible.

He said a surgery date should be either next week or the next. He ask if I could be ready with a 3 or 4 day notice. My comeback to him was that the hospital is 45 minutes from the house, I could be there within the hour!

He has personally called me twice. Nice.

I am getting restless waiting for a surgery date. I was told it would either be this week or next week. Somehow I'm thinking it won't be this week. My pain level is continually going up. I think the prosthesis is getting looser? This is on my upper shin - the outside of the knee is very sore to touch. Just ready to get this over
with. Its making me cranky and that just isn't me. Ugh.

Well poo. Another disappointment. Surgery date is Oct 2nd, not next week. I am so ready for this, but what's 2 more weeks? If someone cancels I'm up, but who knows if that will happen. He only does big surgeries (TKR & revisions) on Wed. and scopes on Fridays - so that's why the delay. I'll live.

Step one has been completed. I've been cleared for surgery by my PCP. Next up is meeting with the surgeon and hospital pre-op. That happens next Monday. It seems like Oct 2nd is so far off, but yet its not. I am forcing myself to ice & elevate daily - does wonders for me.

I have my last appointment with the surgeon tomorrow. He is very through and wants to make certain I totally understand everything he is going to do. Also he wants to see the knee again. Its nothing pretty to look at, that's for sure.

Any questions I should ask him? I've got several in mind, but wondered if I'm missing something. I'm ready for me to be on the recovery road!!!

I am a little confused. I know you "love" your OS but isn't this his 3rd try revision on the same knee?

Yes it is the 3rd revision with him. The first one he was trying to get the knee straight, among other things. The one in Feb of this year he replaced the bottom prosthesis, not the top. This time with all that has happened he is replacing everything and using cement. Before I've been cementless.

I'm sure other's are wondering why I've stayed with this surgeon. He is a BS recommended surgeon which rates high with me. He's been a "top doc" multiple years in a row in our area. He's also a revision specialist. I'm very confident in his abilities - now if my darned bones would cooperate everything would be great!

Surgeon appointment today. He went into great detail of exactly everything he his going to do during surgery. I only became nervous when he said 4 to 6 hrs, possibly. He's thinking it will be closer to the 4 hr, and I'm his only surgery that afternoon. Then I had my hospital pre-op. I didn't remember 9 vials of blood being drawn before, but I'm sure it was. Next up is surgery - Oct 2nd can't come quick enough for me.
