I just got back from my doc's office. No surprise I have arthritis in my knee. He told me I was blessed to have early arthritis in my spine, hip and knee. We discussed the probability of it all being caused by my hypopituitarism as hormones have been very deficient for a long time.

I heard the words from him that it was not caused by all my running!!

Anyway I got corisone shot # 2 in the knee. He said under the kneecap was very deficient in cartilage and I have a large bone? cyst. He said he was not sure what the outcome of arthroscopic surgery would be with a cyst that size.
He did not want to have the surgery conversation with me until my hip is pretty recovered and my quad muscles are stronger. Also all the hip muscles.

He did ask me what hurt more , my back, recovering hip or knee. Good question.

He also gave me a brochure on Hyalgan. Now I am seeking info from the experts on these injections. He did say I may not want to go that way, but just to learn about it.

I am going back to see him in 2 weeks

Oh, you knee people and Josephine are the experts!!!
What experience have you guys had with large knee cysts and hyalgan?

Thanks
Judy

No expericence with hyalgan but had bone cysts that were bad prior to surgery, also a fractured tibia that I didn't even know about until he fixed it during surgery. I have done fine with the BTKR almost four months post op and been back to normal for quite a while. I had an easy recovery comparted to a lot of people but I think it was because of the amount of pain meds I am on. I, also, have bad arthritis in my spine. Have had it for 27 years that I know about. Had surgery when I was 40 and told that I had the spine of a 75 year old so hate to think what it is like now that I am 67. Have cervical stenosis that is moderate to severe that causes lots of pain in different places. All in all though I think the secret is to not stop moving. As one doctor told me years ago if I do I won't start up again. LOL. Anyway I wish you luck which ever way you decide to go. I was in so much pain and had no cartlidge so I had no choice but the BTKR. Rowdy

Hi Judy, I had Hyalgan shots and unfortunately, they did not help me. Others have reported success with them so don't let my experience discourage you from trying them. I think the only difference between the Hyalgan and Synvisic(sp) that you see posted on here is the brand. Obviously, we all want to try the conservative treatments before considering knee replacement so I would definitely give it a shot if your doc thinks it might help. I can't help you with the knee cysts.

I always love when a doctor asks which problem area hurts more like your doctor asked. I just want to ask at what moment? Something is ALWAYS hurting. Karen

I have had excellent results with Synvisc in my non-operated knee. The problem there is between the femur and the knee cap. I'be had the series of injections 4 times since 2002.

Linda,
I am glad to hear that the Synvisc has been successful for you. By the time I had symptoms in my left knee it was too far gone to try the injections. But my other knee is Stage 2 OA and we are going to look at options. You are the first person I have found who said the Synvisc worked for them! Of course, this is a knee *replacement* forum so I guess that makes sense, huh?

I had 3 sets of Synvisc injections... First set was like a miracle had occurred and lasted for about 8 months, second set eased the pain to a degree but only lasted 4 months, third set was a bust. After 2 1/2 years of starting my first set of Synvisc injections, plus numerous cortisone injections, I'll be having a RTKR Sept. 29th. My suggested is try the Hyalgan or Synvisc... it should buy you some time. Good Luck!
Sandy

thanks Sandy--
Glad to hear it worked for someone else....I am sure it is in my future....
