Hi

Has anyone had any advice about massaging around the scar or using E45 cream or anything similar once the wound has healed. I was told to massage E45 into either side of the scar which I've been doing but wonder if it's ok to put it on the scar 5 weeks post op. Do you think this would help the scar to fade?:pzld:

I'm no fan of massaging scars or using creams on them. Can't see the point as they generally fade perfectly well on their own! This is my scar at 9 weeks; that's two weeks ago and it's faded even more now. Plus it's soft and pliable, just like normal skin! And I've never done a thing to it!

BTW, who told you to massage it?

My own thoughts, why? I have had many surgeries and tried rubbing vit E on one....no difference than the other scars. Our bodies heal they way they do. I don't really worry how my scar will look no one will see it. It only goes about an inch below the panty line or bathing suit line.

The area each side of the scar has become less bumpy since I've been using E45, but then I don't know how it compares to what it would have been like if I hadn't done that. The scar isn't looking too bad at all. My scar is quite long so will show a fair bit when I'm in a bathing suit. It doesn't bother me too much but I just wanted to know if there is anything that is likely to speed up or prolong the fading process.

It was the physiotherapist that said I could use E45 either side of the scar but told me not to put anything on the scar until it had healed.

I went to a professional massage therapist at about 4 weeks or so to get some help losening up a tight IT band just below my scar; but while I have no knowledge if massage or creams help scars at all, I do know it sure felt good. I still rub my own almost everynight just a little bit.

Hi Cat--I have always believed in Vitamin E and I have used it on various scars over the years with apparent success(to my eye). My wife likes bag balm, which is basically a farm product, and swears that it helped her surgery scar from last year. As a result, I have been using both consistently since surgery. I have notice no fading or improvement in my scar tissue whatsoever, but I'm still hopeful and, as Mud said, it feels good.
My PT also did some scar massaging to make the incision more pliable. It seems to help.

I've been using Vitamin E oil and gently massaging the scar too now and then. It hasn't changed the appearance, but it seems to provide some relief when I getting a stinging sensation on the scar.

I've been using vitamin E and Bio-Oil. I love the smell of the bio-oil and it really helps with the itchiness of the scar -very soothing. Not sure if it has helped the appearance that much, but I like it.

I've been using the Vitamin E cream an and Bio-Oil as well – and I am sure they have had no effect at all. My scar is 14 cm (about 5.5 inches) long, quite wide and a deep purple colour. I am not worried about the appearance; just a little surprised that the promised “thin white line” doesn’t look like it is going to happen!

Looks like it certainly doesn't HURT at least!!! :)

Monica, I'm so glad you mentioned that. My scar is still deep purple too. I'm at 11 weeks now and it doesn't look like it's getting white yet at all.

Hi Melissa,
At the three month stage my sister and I compared scars (she had a LTHR on the same day as mine) and hers was already heading towards that "thin white line" look then. I don't think she used any creams at all...

We have similar skin and build, so not sure why there is a difference, but not at all bothered.

I have some bio oil tucked away in a drawer somewhere which I'll use, once I find it:)

Given that I have a knee zipper that has been gone through at least 3 times and now a hip zipper gone through 3 times in the last 8 months it is all sort of a lost cause as far as appearances are concerned but that never mattered anyway. I do use vit E to speed the healing and reduce the itch factor. I've long heard that it is wise to avoid sun exposure on recent scars and I've seen gals even use tape for that purpose.

I use that Vit E oil , does anyone find after awhile it feels sticky. Like I bend and it feels tight..Mine does and I dont know why...
