Hi All,

So, I had a hip replacement in January of 2017. Long story short, I also knew at some point I needed a spine fusion. Hip took priority, then this past April I had L4, L5 and S1 fused. Three months after the fusion I started having bad leg pain. Which I had before the replacement. The pain got worse, and the doctors thought it was my spine. But my spine surgeon said my MRI was fine, and it was my hip. Sure enough, that MRI showed an issue of an "impingement". Second opinion surgeon said same thing. The surgery would involve a revision. Something about the socket being loose and the bone did not heal right.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I know a revision is worse than the initial surgery. And then are there any guarantees of this not happening a second time? The alternative of living with the pain is not that appealing, but I do not want a revision to make it worse.

I would be very thankful for any insight/advice anyone has on hip revision so soon. Thanks, and I look forward to reconnecting here! This is a great community.

Karen

I'm so sorry to hear that it looks like a revision is in your future. If your socket is loose, that would be the resolution. But please know that the revision surgery is not usually worse than the primary operation. Recovery is normally similar too.

We do have a group of members here who have had hip revisions and it usually is because one or both of the components is loose. It happens and the revision usually does the trick quite well.

But.....in these cases it is very important that you have a revision specialist doing the surgery. That means a doctor who sees and successfully fixes a lot of cases like yours each year. So, if you're thinking of going with one of the two surgeons you've seen, ask him how many revisions he does in a year before you schedule anything. And if you'd like some help either find a revision specialist or checking out surgeons you're considering, just let me know in a post here in your thread. Be sure and tag me so I see it quickly. @Jamie,

I am considering a surgeon with Hospital For Special Surgery. The first surgeon I saw sounded confident he could fix it but is not a specialist. There is another surgeon who specializes in revision I have not seen yet. I am seeing the HSS surgeon Monday with a list of questions, and the other surgeon Tuesday. To add insult to injury I just lost my job and weighing out doing the surgery now vs. waiting a year after a new job. Not sure of ramifications of waiting. When it rains it pours. Do you want the two surgeon's names?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Welcome to the forum again, sorry for the circumstances leading you back to BoneSmart.
While I have no advice, you have my sympathy.
I wish you all the best meeting with the two surgeon's next week.
With any luck you'll settle on one of the two, formulating a plan to move forward. I wish you comfort in the interim. I hope your weekend is a pleasant one.

I am so sorry that you have lost your job on top of the other issues and especially at this time. When you see the surgeons you might want to ask them what the ramifications of waiting a year would be so that you can make an informed decision for you and your health.

It sounds like you are on the right track for finding the best person to get this done. I would like to know who you're seeing at HHS and some feedback on your meetings with them. You can either post it here in your thread or send me a PM. I keep track of this type of thing in case I need to help someone find the appropriate surgeon. I would think you'll be fine with any surgeon at HHS who does an adequate number of revisions annually. Good for you taking written questions to your appointment. That way you won't accidentally forget to ask something.

Yes, I did get your message. Thank you. I just haven't had a chance to respond to you yet. I'm not familiar with that surgeon and want to do a little research into him.

@Jamie, Thanks so much, that is so great you will research them. Should I be concerned Dr. Ast does not have a lot of reviews, such as nothing on him on health grades and I did not see him on Castle Connelly. But he is booked out for surgery through October.

I met with Dr. Pizzurro today, he said the same thing about the Stryker hip socket, and patients having issues. He wants me to get additional blood work and will order a CT Scan.

Dr. Ast's nurse called and he has an opening for July 1st. Because I am not working, I am thinking to get this done and behind me, so I can recover and get back to a new job! I am SO confused, omg.

Wow, @Onestepatatime, sounds like you've got a lot on your plate right now. Dealing with a hip revision decision and the whole job situation--that is a lot to deal with. No comments really on hip revisions, but sounds like you're on the right track to finding a good surgeon and making a timing decision. Best of luck to you!
