Hi everyone, I am so glad I found this site. I am having my right hip replaced on june 12th. I was diagnosed with AVN in both hips in Janurary.I am very scared about having the surgery. I am 53 and I wonder what it will feel like to have metal in my body, can any one that has had this surgery give me some insight as to what it is going to feel like on a daily basis? I have heard that sometimes you can feel it when it is cold outside. Others have said you will not notice it. Any insight would be much appreciated. thanks

Don't feel a thing a far as the implant goes.Don't worry you will feel alot better. My surgery was March 6th.I can do things now I could hardly do before.I truely feel like a new man.I am 42 years old.

I think the significance of the metal is over played by a lot people. Think of this - the average body weighs around 190lbs. Each leg is one fifth of the total body weight, thus being about 40lbs.

Most hip replacements prostheses weigh around 10 ozs, less if they're made of titanium. So you figure it out. It would be about the same impact as having a solid bracelet on your wrist.

(BTW hips are comparatively smaller in ratio to body m*** than knees so different)

Hi dids,
thanks for the insight. I just went in yesterday to have another film taken so they can measure the bones for the new hip. It is becoming very real really fast.I go in Next tuesday morning at 5:30 am. I am trying to get my mind in the right place. I know the first two weeks will be hard they tell me. Thanks again :-)

Hi Katwood

Soon it will be over. I had both hips replaced and the one thing that amazes me is that I cannot feel I have those things that the X rays show. My prosthesis are metal on metal and I was scared that i was going to go click clack when walking. The only thing I feel now when I walk is that the pain is gone and I am straight and taller.

Next month I am going to test them at the airport

Good luck for your operation and I am sure that you will not regret having it.

Hi everyone,
Today is eight days after my hip surgery. I feel good, have not too much pain and am up and walking with my walker. The first two days were really hard but after that everything has been improved each day. Thanks to all who wrote to me. It really helped put my mind at ease.

What a thought! But if you knew the micro-machining that goes into make sure the ball is a perfect to the cup by thousandths of a mm to make it smooth as if it was on air, you'd realise why it doesn't go 'click clack'! Even the big ends in your car engine are not fashion into such a perfect fit. That's why they'll last a lot longer than the big ends in your car engine!

Thank you Aussie Hippie, (Like your name by the way)
Today I am up and walking around, I still feel like I need the walker for balance. My right leg is now longer than my left. My doctors say they will correct it with the left hip replacement. I am not ready for that any time soon. I will go to the park today for my first outing Yeah!! Outside sounds good! Thnaks again , Katwood

Great to hear from you Katwood! I had been hoping that everything went alright! Someday I will be where you are at now. I pray that your recovery goes well and that you improve with every day. Enjoy life!!!!!!

Thanks Randy,

I went to my doc yesterday and everything is doing fine, i am almost off the pain meds. I really do not feel the AVN at all anymore. I am just waiting for my wound to heal (that has been the most pain I have felt if any) You will know when it is time to get THR. I coundn't hardley walk any more and it was affecting my job, so I had to make a decision. So far everything has been really positive. thanks for your support. It really helped having people to talk to about this. Take care Katwood

Hi Katwood
I'm going in for my first hip surgery next month on the 16th.
I am going to give my blood on Monday for the surgery. Did you do that?
I hope my surgery goes as well as yours.
Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I did not give blood for my surgery. I asked about it but my surgeon said I was young and in good health and at a good weight and that I did not need to do that. My recovery has been going really good I am at 6 weeks post op.I have been walking everyday and going to physical therapy twice a week.I am driving my car and will return to work on Aug 22.
I guess that your surgeon will determine if donating your blood is needed. I had never had a surgery before and I was really scared and It sure helped talking with others on this site regarding THR. I am sure that your surgery will go really smooth and you will be glad just as I was when it is over and the pain is gone.
Take care and let us know how you do.
Karen
