Hello everyone,
This is my first visit to BoneSmart and I'm very glad I found your site. Three years ago I had both knees replaced (2 months apart and due to severe arthritis) and those surgeries went very well. Just as I was getting back on my feet and out there living, the pain started in my hip. Struggled along but now I've had enough. So off I go for another surgery. I am not so worried about my hospital stay and convalescent hospital stay as I am about coming home. My 96 year old Mother lives with me and it is just the 2 of us. I am really worried that I'll forget about the 90 degree thing and pop the joint apart. One of my neighbours did exactly that.

Is this a frequent occurance? How easily does that happen? I think I'll be afraid to move.

Hello Donna, Welcome, Now you really will be the Bionic women ...lol...Make notes if you have to all ovr the house. Take care of yourself. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you keep us posted....Prayers coming your way!!!!!Im a knee but I know others will post soon and help you out !!!!:)

Hi Donna
I worried about the same thing. It was never a problem as it would hurt to get into the forbidden positions so even if I accidentally started I would not get very far.
It is a wonderful surgery with a good surgeon. I just love my new hip and can do anything with it. Right from day 1 it all felt normal and natural, I would never suspect I have anything but a painless hip in there.

Hi, Donna....welcome to the BoneSmart forums! We're glad you found us and look forward to supporting you through this next surgery. Please post whenever you have a question or concern....or just to pop in and say, "Hi!".....we love hearing about our members.

Kim's idea about the signs was a good one that I hadn't thought of. Actually I was going to tell you that popping your new hip out is really rare. From what I hear from the hippies (I'm actually from the knee side), your body tells you (with a little pain reminder) when you're geting close to violating that 90 degree rule. I'm sure you'll be just fine. Bless your heart for being there for your mother!

Hi Donna - welcome to BoneSmart! I moved your thread out of the Social Room into the Hip Surgery Forum.

I think what Judy and Jamie said was spot on - you'll soon know if you approach the no-no area as it will hurt! And whilst it's only for six weeks, it's on a sliding scale of risk. Greatest risk is the first few days after. Then, as the wound heals and the muscles regain their tone, it gets less and less until, when the doctor gives you the all clear, you're set to start living your life normally which will include things like washing your feet, putting on socks and shoes, all that kind of stuff. At that point, dislocations are pretty rare.

Pain will be your guide!!! Believe me!! You will know that you are doing something wrong!!
Keep posting and letting us know what is going on with you!!!

Welcome!!

Good morning and thanks to everyone for the responses. Oddly enough I didn't think the new hip would give me a shot of pain if I got too close to the 90 degrees. That is very worthwhile info. Thank you again.

Welcome Donna! Common sense will guide you as well! ((:0)

good luck donna for sep 16th, mine is 23rd of sep so you must be feeling just like i do at the moment good luck again xxx

Good luck to you as well Tracie. September seems to be a popular month for hip surgery. I now find I'm not sleeping very well as the hip pain wakes me. Then of course I am pretty tired most of the day. Anyway, it will all be over soon and all will be "Primo".

Good thinking, Donna! And good luck Tracie! :thmb:

Hi Donna,

Best of luck on Sept. 16th, I am sure you will do well. I noticed you are from Canada, and was curious about the Canadian healthcare system. How long did they make you wait to schedule your hip replacement?

Hop

Hello Hopalong!!
This will be my 3rd joint replacement. Same fantastic surgeon. The first knee replacement was a 90 day wait, the second knee was done as soon as I felt I was ready which was 10 weeks after. I asked for the hip surgery anytime after Sept. 10. (I design events and my last one for the year is Sept. 9. So not too long a wait there at all. I will be in hospital for 4 days and then in a convalescent hospital until I feel completely mobile. Then when I am home there will be a home care worker come in every day to help with meals and such which is partially because the only other person in the house is my 96 year old Mother. I was happy to hear about that service I'll tell you.

Hi Donna and welcome, what everyone has said is true pain will guide you. I am almost 3 months since my surgery and I still worry. The main thing that struck me when reading your question is you are so lucky to still have your mom around and shes in her 90's. Good luck to you both and I will keep you in my prayers

Gods Blessings

Hi Donna and Tracie!! I'm in the September club as well...September 14th and I have all the same fears..e'll all just have to keep tabs on each other!

hi shugaplum (great name) there seems to be a lot of us having our ops in sep so indeed we can all check out each others progress xxx

Hey there Sept. club,
Today I had an appointment with my GP just to make sure all is in order before I go for the Pre-op appointment on Friday. I am nervous that I may be low in Iron because I haven't been eating red meat. So we had some blood tests done and tomorrow we'll know if I'm low. Should that be the case I'll have a shot. I really don't know why I'm anxious this time, I had both knees done by the same surgeon with great success. Also, I'm not sleeping well - how about you?

Oh that's good that the wait was not so long for you. I was wondering because I remember reading last year a Canadian woman was forced to wait 18-months in pain to have her THR because of the Universal Healthcare in place in Canada.
Have they changed the healthcare policies since?

Hop

I heard they got so much worse....ex. Natasha Richardson's tragic death....and 20/20 investigative reports!!
