My husband has been told he needs a hip replacement and has been referred to a surgeon. My husband is a right leg above the knee amputee for over 25 years. It is the left hip they want to replace. We live in an out of the way area (Bullhead City, AZ). I worry that because of my husbands unique situation there are additional considerations needed in regards to the surgery itself and the recovery. I just want to make sure everything is addressed. I just am not sure that any of the therapists or doctors have dealt with this particular situation before.

Anyone out there have any similar experience or suggestions?

thanks
Lori

Hi, Lori and welcome to the BoneSmart forum. You are correct that your husband's situation is unique to most who post here. But our forum nurse, Josephine, will be checking in soon and she has a wealth of knowledge and experience with ALL types of orthopedic surgery. I know she will have some advice for you.

In the meantime, I'll ask whether you are within driving distance to a larger city with a major hospital where you could get a second opinion? I agree with you that you need to think of all contingencies BEFORE the surgery takes place.

I would think the answer to your question regarding if there would be any particular problems is a cautious no, Lori. Some of the bigger hip units will have previous experience. I suggest you ring hospitals, especially teaching hospitals, and ask them.

Welcome and Best of luck to you and your husband, Lori!!! :).

I guess I should have mentioned that he does not wear a prosthesis. Crutches and a motorized cart are how he gets around. I assume this might change the rehab?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Chris :)

Well, then you could (if you are really concerned) go talk to someone at a larger hospital for a second opinion. I suppose you could even consider having it done at one of the larger facilities if you are worried about it.

Even more important, though.....be sure you are confident in your surgeon, then trust what he says. Here is a link to some questions and considerations:

Hi Lorilynnr
Welcome to the forum. I'm sure in a bigger city there has to be a physical therapist with suggestions for your husband's health situation. Good of you to start searching now.
