Six years ago I had my right hip replaced with the nylon cup and metal ball. Two years ago the left hip was replaced with the new Magnum metal on metal prosthesis. I've had no problems with the older type replacement, but the newer model has dislocated twice. Once last winter while I was on my hands and knees watering the christmas tree and 4 weeks ago while sitting on the steps leading to the basement in our house. The only difference between the two replacements, besides the type, was that the surgeon recommended radiation on the left side to prevent calcification of the muscle. I'm contemplating having the surgeon go back in to see if anything is wrong with the prosthesis or muscles. Maybe having the replacement removed and the older model put in since I've not had any problems with the older model. I'm 62 and will probably have to have it replaced in 10 or 15 years. Has anyone had dislocation issues with the newer type prosthesis?

I can promise you this, dhart - it has nothing to do with the type of prosthesis, only the way it was put in coupled with the way in which your muscles healed and got back their tone (or failed to get back their tone).

Sometimes a period of physio might get some of the muscle tone back but in extreme cases which ever group of muscles it is that has permitted this to happen may need to be tightened up.

If that wouldn't work, or isn't the problem, then the cup (it's usually the cup) may need to be re-inserted to be at a better angle.

I think it's a really bad piece of luck for you. The sad thing is that when a THR has dislocated once, it has a tendency to do so again.
