I am an avid (3000+ miles/year) road bicyclist, 57 years old, considering hip replacement or hip refacement surgery. Anyone out there in a similar situation? My research so far seems to tell me that I won't be able to bend over the handlebars correctly.

Hi Alichten
I cycled in the Maldives 8 weeeks after surgery don't see any problem. Other more avid cyclists on the board seem to have had no problem either

If you do the therapy and rebuild those muscles, you should be able to do anything you want. Do the exercises.

I mountain bike...does that count??? :) I wonder what my OS would think if he ever saw some of my falls!!

Hi Alichten,
My situation is a lot like yours. I do multi-day bike rides, and am training for a century. I am 51, and have been told I need a hip replacement. I am just beginning to gather information, so I talked to a physical therapist. He thought it unlikely that I could return to 100 mile rides. I'm not giving up, so my next step is a second opinion from a surgeon, and talking to everybody and anybody I can. So far I haven't found any other cyclists until you.

Are they any other cyclists that have had a replacement and are able to do centuries? I also teach spinning classes and do weight lifting.

Hi Cyclist,

Although I do not road bike, I can't imagine that you would be unable to return to any level you are at now with a good surgeon's help. Being in good physical condition going into the surgery is a big help and working hard after seals the deal. Find a surgeon who really knows their stuff and talk to them. My surgeon knew that I wanted to return to my athletic endevors following my simultaneous bilateral THR and was willing to work with me to achieve that. Biking is considered a 'good' activity for THR and there are very few if any long term restrictions, so as soon as you get your muscle tone back you should be good to go.

You tell'm, ripanco! That's the way to do it!!

Well, it is 3½ months since my Birmingham hip resurfacing, and I couldn't be happier! My doctor did not want me to ride my bike for 3 months, so it has only been 2 weeks since I started riding outdoors - I was able to do indoor cycling during my rehab. I have found that my average speed is more that 1 mph faster than last year, for the same level of fitness. I assume that is because I am able to actualy put some strength into pedaling on what was formerly the bad side. There is no pain while riding - no pain at all, in fact. No problems mounting, bending over the bars, etc.

Thanks to all of you for your encouragement!

:)

Way to go! Love to hear this kind of report. And just think, you are going to continue to improve for up to a year!

Am at 5 weeks and rode my bike today. Just keep your seat up high to not violate the hip rules. It felt a bit strange at first, but not bad. Definitely easier than just before surgery. Went 1.7 easy miles today.

Dear Ano,
I am now more than 7 weeks after THR and would very much like to rode my bicycl but I am afraid as my doctors can't give me any concret recomendations.
I am quite understanding that my case was maybe more difficult (except THR I had and bone's plastic+antiprotrusion Mueller's ring in acetabulum) and that my Ukraine isn't the same as your USA, nevertheless...
If you or maybe someone at this very respectable Forum has real recomendations for me - please, don't hesitate and write me. It is so important to feel even smallest support and help!!!
With best wishes before and after Easter to all who had or will have THR - from Ukraine.
Yours sincerely,
