I will be having a consultatin next week at the VA Bay Pines Hospital in regards to porrible hip repalcement.

I would like to hear from anyone who has had this done recently and your comments.

I am 60 years old and I work out and I am in excellent physical condition.

I would like to know recovery time, type of hip replacement material to use, and how long shuld this last before it may require another repalcement down the road 10, 15 20 + years.

Thanks
Richard W.

A cobalt chrome hip ball on a crosslinked polyethylene cup should last you 15 to 20 years. What usually happens to make an implant fail is the body's reponse to wear debris created by the artificial joint, which causes the bone to "dissolve" (osteolysis). For longer lasting hip replacement, you might consider metal ball on a metal cup, or a ceramic ball on a ceramic cup. They produce much less debris than polyethylene. They have their own considerations, so discuss it with your doctor. It is also important to know what he is experienced in, because a better joint put in poorly is worse than a regular joint put in with competence.
