Ok - The only time I have ever had hip pain was always right b4 I would give in and go to the Surgeon for my knee - only problem it was the opposite side from my knee.

My hip has not really bothered during the PT process until yesterday. And this time it is the hip attached to the knee that has been replaced. During PT (hanging in the squat) my right hip REALLY started to hurt - from not al all to a 8 of 10 on a pain scale). I mentioned to the PT - he said it was due to the limping, etc over the past 2 months - ok - I didn't want to whine so we finished up pt I came home - hung out - took the pain meds and went to sleep with the cry cuff runing full bore on the knee.

Well the knee was ok this am but the hip is killing me! I mean really killing me. This hip has NEVER hurt. never and I don't need this on top of the knee. The pain meds take the edge off but as I type I am noticing that now my back is aching on the same side of that hip.

I know - rest. I will 2nite, but... my question is - do I tell pt b4 or after I "get bent" tomorrow. I think he needs to know - but I don't want it to interfere with what we have to do - although if it stops reacting to the pain meds I will be in big trouble. He said t was from all the limping but I would think that it would have come on more slowly - plus I have dealt with that b4 - this is way different - and more deep - wondering if I may have stretched something wrong yesterday and just need to give it a few days. - Dont need any more problems - Heat or ice??? I can do either!

Thanks for your input -

Marianne, I developed a hip pain on the side where my TKR was at about 5 months. It really scared me because I was afraid that maybe arthritis was developing there too and it was going to be a problem. I made an appointment with my OS and had him take an xray to see what was going on. We were both sure there was probably no problem, but he said this would at least provide a baseline for any problems down the road. Sure 'nuff, there was no problem in the hip joint. But he did tell me the pain was no doubt real and "soft tissue" pain from some type of twisting or overexertion. One of t he things I found to be a problem was wearing shoes with rubber soles on carpet that "stuck" when I made the normal twisting movements doing things around the house. When I stopped wearing the shoes (my problem was with Crocs), the pain went away in a day or so. When I wore the shoes again, it came back. Your pain is probably caused by something entirely different than Crocs on carpet, but if you are worried about it, get an xray. And if you're not that worried, then I would say to take it easy for a few days (even in PT) and see if it improves. Your therapist should understand the need not to aggrivate it. Take anti-inflammants like Aleve or Tylenol too. I would DEFINITELY say something before you "get bent"!! The PT works for you, after all and you have a say in what you do and don't do. They should be able to work around it for a day or so. Good luck!!! Hope it improves!!!!

Marianne,
I am sorry your hip is acting up. Seems to have come on so rapidly must mean pulling a muscle or doing something to a muscle or tendon.
Good Luck with it. I would try to rest a few days and see if it improves.

Marianne,
I had the same thing about 6 weeks ago. It hurt to walk and I was thinking how it would be unbelievable if I had to have a hip replacement.
I hadn't changed my leg workout but I have modified it now to include some hip work. Pulled ligament, arthritis. Don't know.
I am wondering if it is pressure soreness from the mattress I sleep on. It is a super firm that never used to bother me but now I end up moving around the house for a comfortable place to sleep.

We had the same problem with our old mattress, Doug. We ended up with all kinds of pains that have now disappeared with our new softer mattress. It might be a good thing to get a new one....or at least look at them. We were quite surprised at all the new features available, especially the use of memory foam in all the good ones.

Marianne,

I am having similiar problems that just "came" on suddenly, and I think it was as I became more active. I am 3 months out, and about 2 weeks ago, I started getting pain in my rear, but it isn't my gluts, it is higher. My PT said that my left leg (the leg with the TKR) is longer, and this could be my problem, I probably need a heel lift. It has gotten so bad that I don't sleep at night, and it has really messed up my exercises, the extension ones in particular.
Just so happens, I had an appointment with the OS today, and he said that it is my sciatic nerve. He gave me some heavy duty steriod pack, and said that the inflamation should clear up very quickly and I should be feeling really good soon! I sure hope it works. Does this sound like your problem area? If so, heat makes it feel better, and a call to your OS might be in order!

Hello

I developed the same problem in both hips (BTKR). My PT said it is trochanter bursitis. He started doing some work on the hips and gave me an exercise to do. I also have a problem at the knee joint where the tibia is. He thinks that is also a bursitis problem. The tight IT band does not help.

I noticed that that both hips started hurting once I was able to sleep on m side. I ended up ordering one of those down mattress covers.
WOW! It has made all the difference in the world. No more hip pain and it also helped with my back pain. Hubby said he felt better also.
Our mattress is really stiff and I am pretty sure that was the culprit.
I am a side sleeper and after about 30 minutes my hip would start hurting like crazy. Every time we change our sheets we turn the cover around and just fluff it up. It fluffs up like the day we first put it on the bed.

Yesterday AM while brushing my teeth - I sit on the edge of my tub and pull my knee in (like heel slides) the hip hurt when I pulled back to max point - so I let up and went easy so I didn't inflame anything knowing I had PT at 1pm.

Asked PT, he still thinks it is all inflamed from the limp from the knee. Although he said it als may have to do with quad. He said heat or ice but keep pushing the knee. He will keep an eye on it. It really only hurts when there is hard pressure on the knee to bend - maybe its my brain saying no more :) - Hope not.

I am a side sleeper too - but it really doesn't hurt till there is that specific pressure - no worries - I don't think it is arthritis or anything - I will rest it this weekend and be back to ok on Monday - I am just glad it isn't something that doesn't go away.

Thanks for al the insights - greatly appreciated!

Just a suggestion but try using ice on your low back. I have a lot of hip pain which is really nerve pain that begins in my low back and ice is the only thing that works for me. I have trouble with both hips sometimes the both hurt or one side will hurt and the other one will be fine or vise versa. The further out I get from my surgery though the less I have this problem which is a relief. Hope this helps. Ice is my old wonder drug, when all else fails get the ice out and get relief. I know a lot of people think heat feels better but once you get used to using ice I don't see how you could go back to heat. Of course it depends on the kind of pain you have and sometimes heat is what works best. Oh, well. I confused even myself with the last part. Rowdy

I totally understand the ice as drug of choice. I have managed to price bags of ice all around the area I live. We have found that a small chain that adevertises itself as a "small town Costco" is the cheapest at 1.58 per bag. My poor ice machine at home in the freezer can't keep up with the demand theses days - the cryo cuff is running during school and almost all night after a pt day or a day like yesterday or today when I am hanging and stretching causing lots of swelling! Its a good thing I live in the land of glaciers (hahahaha :) )
Hanging as I type -Enjoy your Sunday!

Hey Marianne!
All this time I thought it was global warming and its just you using up all the ice up there! :-) I sure hope you are feeling better. Tomorrow is coming up way to fast. We have both grandboys next Friday thru Monday!
I plan on getting as much rest as I can between now and then. The littlest one is really into painting right now, so he is content to sit at the dining table and paint the afternoon away. I hope you do well at school tomorrow. When do you go back to the OS? I know your daughter is taking good care of you.
You are in my prayers.
Tammy
