Hi folks,
Whilst I have improved brilliantly in terms of my stride and strength etc, the one thing that is still an issue is my flexion....the physio made mention of hip manipulation (like the knee one) .....I have to see the OS soon and I wondered whether any one had heard of this ......Im still not even at a consistent 90 degrees,:hissy: and I'm not sure whether this is something that will just improve or whether a bit of a push and shove under anaesthetic would help. Of course I don't want any torn muscles.....I would like to be able to put on socks and tie laces....:sct::sct:

Any experience in this? Jo are you out there??

Rachel

Hi, Rachel.....I thought I remember Jo saying one time that manipulations weren't done on hips. But if your doctor is suggesting it, maybe they ARE!!! Hopefully she'll check in in a bit and provide her thoughts. I say...whatever it takes to get what you want in terms of movement....go for it. As long as you trust your surgeon I would think you have nothing to worry about in terms of torn muscles or other bad things. When you see your doc the next time, ask for more details on what exactly he will be doing. I think it would be good to post that information here!!

Rachel
I had a horrible ROM before surgery. I attribute my great ROM after to swimming, mostly doing the frog kick. My doc was afraid to get it to the end of its limits thinking it would dislocate right on his exam table. Very flexible.

i havent asked the os,it was a question from the pt. She said that very occasionally os would do manipulations

In that case, why don't you give your doc a call and talk with him about it. Or better yet, make an appointment and go in to discuss it in person.

Well, let me put it this way - I've never heard of an MUA on a THR so I can only say they are pretty rare. But you know the old saying "never say never"!!

What is a hip manipulation?:pzld:

It would be where your surgeon would put you under and then manually move the hip joint in an effort to break up any scar tissue that might be prohibiting full range of motion. A manipulation is sometimes done on knees, but it's not a common thing with hips.

to be honest I don't know if it even exists....? Just a passing comment from the pt....I've got an OS appointmt on September 22nd....

You can manipulate any joint but the reasons for manipulating a knee are because it has limited range on movement as compared to a hip so any adhesions can cause problems. This is also because everything is tightly packed into that area of the limb. Very restricted.

However, the hip is a very freely moving joint and those movements are made by bulky muscles which, unlike ligaments, don't suffer from adhesions.

Can they do stretches without tearing muscles/ligaments under anaesthetic?....to get the joint moving further....I am quite sure that the restrictions have come about because of the years of shortened muscles etc.....
Rachel

If the restrictions are because of muscles shortening from pre-existing deformities then an MUA is probably not indicated. MUAs are usually only beneficial for problems arising from the surgery.

As for tearing things under GA, part of the reason for doing an MUA where there are adhesions is to tear the adhesions. However, the skill of the surgeon is knowing how much force to apply which will achieve the objective without causing any peripheral damage. Having said that, I will repeat, I've never heard of a hip MUA for this purpose and I doubt it would be appropriate or suggested for your case.

Hi Kangaroo,
I don't know if the problem you are having is the same as mine. I am only 6 weeks past last surgery, so not as far along as you.
For over a year, I did not bend at the knees to pick something up from the floor, I would just bend from the hip and keep my legs straight. Thus those front thigh muscles did not get used very much. Now, when I bend a leg up behind me from the knee, it hurts.
So, to stretch these muscles, I slide off the couch down to a crouch, and then push back up onto the couch. Another exercise I do, is to get down on the floor on my knees with my lower legs behind, and gradually sit down on my lower legs while leaning back. They hurt and I do it as long as I can tolerate. No pain, no gain.

Rachel, if your problem stems from years of non-use or malalignment, I would think your best bet would be exercises and lots of stretching during therapy (or on your own, once you learn what to do). If this is what's going on, remember it took a LONG time for the muscles to get in this shape, so it will take at least as long to get them back to normal again....probably longer. I'm thinking this will be a slow process, but one that can be achieved by consistent work.

Sure would be easier if someone could just "fix" it all at once, huh!! No fair!!!

Jamie,,,,I'll be stretching for the next 43 years!!!

Glenys, I do a "cat stretch" on all fours and stretch backwards till I feel a pull....I always did a golf lift when I bent down. Left foot on the ground, right leg straight and levering out behind. I had no chance of just reaching the floor ala touch your toes method! The problem is that I have only just 90 degrees flexion in the joint (when lifting knee straight up).... in order to do up shoelaces you need to pull your knee up much higher so as to reach your feet....and as for sideways its also reduced..... I guess I just have to be patient.
Unfortunately I'm also having lower back pain....which I suspect is because Ive been unable to get to the pool so easily and my exercise quota has reduced, grrrrmy intention and motivation are there.... its just the reality of family life.....

Hi Kangaroo,
Sorry I wasn't much help. I have to make myself work at bending at the knees as it has been so long since doing so. I really noticed the problem when I started doing walking exercises as I would basically kick my leg out from below the knee.
I cannot tie my shoe laces, but am making progress as yesterday I managed to step up onto my truck step for the first time. To put on my socks, I lay my lower leg on the bed with my foot hanging over the edge. Have only just managed that these past few weeks.
Where you haven't used those muscles for so long, it just may take a long time for them to get back into shape, but please, not another 46 years!!! At least the pain is gone.:thmb:
Personally, I think you are doing great, what with the houseful of rugrats you have to keep up with and all that that entails. There was 6 kids in our family and there was always something going on:wub:
More running in the sand should help strengthen those muscles and you don't need shoes for that:p

Nooooooo, Rachel.....It WON'T be another 43 years!! Honest! You'll get there, hon....this is just one of those moments for patience. With your busy family life, I know you practice patience ALL the time. Now you just have to apply it to yourself (easier said than done, huh!).

Who could blame you, Rachel? Also do lunges to build up your quads! Since your legs were different lengths you're probably still adjusting ! Have you tried going to a chiropractor? That sounds more civil than whatever a hip manipulation (?????) would be! ((:0)

yep, i do pt and chiro on a regular basis. fortunately the chiro only charges me what the healthfund pays....

DID I TELL YOU THAT SANTA LAY BYED A BIKE FOR ME AT THE BIKE SHOP????

Hmmmm, I'm just whingeing!
Lower back is giving me agro and Im back on pain killers!!!Grrrr Hip is going like a trouper, just can't quite bend enough.....its still 300% better than prior to surgery, so I shouldn't whinge!
