Hello everyone had my op last thursday and been getting on ok, just wanted to ask couple of questions, down from the operated marks my thigh is numb, no sign of getting any feeling back from it yet, and the other is the bottom of my heel, its really painful also, hopefully someone can clear up these answers lol
Thank you

So what was the actual date of your hip surgery? June 1st?
Which hip did you have the procedure on?
We will add this info to your signature to better let folks advise you.

The numbness is likely due to traumatized nerves and is very common.
This may take weeks or even months (as in my case) to dissipate.
My heels were sore (I had bilateral hip replacement) and it seemed like it was the friction and restless leg issue...
I put a small sherpa type throw under my ankles for a bit to ease it.
I'm going to leave you our recovery guidelines for hip replacement.
The articles are relevant for most hip surgeries.

Just keep in mind all people are different, as are the approaches to this recovery and rehab. The key is, “Find what works for you.“ Your doctors, PTs and BoneSmart are available to help, but you are the final judge as to the recovery approach you choose.

Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

6. Access to these pages on the website

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery.

While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

Yea june 1st and it was my left hip, oh no not months lol, it feels like its itchy and when try scratch it just wont go away, i think ive pushed myself today was so bored laying in bed tried go for a walk using crutches, so more rest tomorrow. Also when i try itch around the cuts its sending a twitch right down my leg so annoying, thanks for all the information i will have a read now.

That twitch is likely those nerves coming to life (A good sign)
Easy does it friend...
Early Days!

I was walking in recovery post-op and ended up with Plantar Fasciitis in my left foot which is severe pain in the heel. It took some time and therapy to get mine to heal and stop hurting. Don't know it that's what you have. I rolled my foot on a frozen water bottle and a roller a lot and did stretches for my Achilles tendon and calf. Plenty of foot stretches on the internet that helped like standing with toes on step and doing heel raises.

So its been 9 days, am i allowed to get the wound wet, i still have couple dissolvable stitches, want to try and get a proper shower.
Thanks

@Harryc433
I was sent home with waterproof bandages and was told to shower with them for the first 3 weeks...
Until I got go ahead at my post-op appt to do without.
Even then, didn't let water directly hit on wound.
I would check with my surgeon's office.

Thanks Mojo, just covered it there and got sorted lol, feel like a new person. up around the hip where they got inside isnt that much sore but down abit left side of thigh and near the kneecap is the most painful.

Hi Harry,

Check with your surgeon’s office to see what they advise about showering. I had my arthroscopy done on Tuesday with standard, non-dissolvable stitches and was told I could shower 48hours post-op. I could get the stitches wet, but was advised to not “soak” them or scrub around the area. Afterwards you’re usually asked to pat the incisions dry and re-cover them with band-aids.

All doctors have specific post op instructions, so if you’re discharge instructions don’t specify bathing, call their office to see what they say.

Best of luck on your recovery!

16 days post op, thigh still numb. Ive been to drs he thinks the nerve got damaged in surgery, when trying to walk without crutch the thigh is so sore. Anyone had same problems? If so did it last long. Seems like the hips fixed now the thighs going to be agony :(

Harry,
Yes, my thigh was numb and sometimes still gets numb.
If it hurts to walk w/o crutch then use the crutch, no sense in being in pain if not necessary.

Hi Harry, I had arthroscopic hip surgery (FAI) twice, once in 2015 and once in 2021. After my first one, I had terrible nerve pain on the front of my hip and thigh. I didn’t know that’s what it was at the time, but it was worse than the surgical pain. It lasted 2-3 months if I remember right, gradually getting better. I also had a numb spot on my thigh about the size of my hand. It took about two years to get the full feeling back again in that spot. Just know that most or all of your symptoms are probably temporary. I know it can be miserable, though. Hang in there and use that ice! This too shall pass.

Thanks Justicerider, my hip feels grand now, but its the thigh, when i take a step its sore at on thigh near the kneecap, plus getting shooting pains around the buttocks same side as the surgery. Never straight forward :(. I can deal with the numbness, its just the thigh and buttock pain i have to get rid off lol. Also thigh is sore to touch and if it gets itchy you try to scratch it and it doesnt go away

That does sound like nerve pain, Harry. If it’s really bothering you a lot, you could ask your doctor about Gabapentin, a medication for nerve pain, and see what he/she thinks. It’s commonly prescribed after joint surgery.

So nearly 4 weeks post op, my groins been having pains in it the last couple of days, thigh still numb and no sign of easing especially when i walk , feel like its been a step backwards :(

Hi Harry, you and I had our surgeries only a few days apart (May 25th for me). I had nerve pain in the front thigh region (right around the anterior surgery scar, undoubtedly the from nerves that were stretched during the surgery). The pain was sharp and stinging, and I had to be careful with my movements to prevent it. There was numbness as well. All of this has now subsided for me since the last week or so.

I've now moved on to feeling tendon/muscle pain in my front hip flexors. I felt like I was walking more pain free in week 3 then now in weeks 4 and 5. I have pain in my walking gait, every step forward with my left leg (the operation side) has a painful feeing like a strain or pull. (Sometimes it feels like groin pain, but it's actually the front hip flexor/psoas for me, not I'm walking more carefully now, taking shorter steps, and paying attention to correct walking form (heel to toe, as they show in diagrams here on this forum).

Mine has felt like a step backward also, but what you learn on this forum and listening to our doctors is this is part of the recovery process. So it goes I think. We'll get better in a non-linear way on our own timelines, and months from now we'll look back on this and smile.

So guys I feel like am back to square one again, with the pain. Still nerve damage as I can't feel front of thigh. Have been put on list for xray, basically back to the start xray, mri, consulation. If only the procedure was a easy fix

Oh no, so sorry to read this. Hope your appts give you answers. Keep us posted.

Welcome back, @Harryc433. So sorry to read that you are still struggling. Was hoping you were doing well since you hadn't posted in a while.

Do let us know what the consultant says after you have the testing done.
