Hi everyone. I'm after some advice. To cut a long story short I'm 44 years old and I was in a car accident in 2010 and had 7 operations on my left knee. Acl reconstructed, plc reconstruction, mcl reconstruction, postolateral corner reconstruction, lots of cartilage removed plus lots of other things as well which I can't pronounc.

Sadly nothing went well and I've been left in terrible pain with awful stability. Finally I've been told I can have a new knee but it will be a fully constrained hinged knee due to instability.

Any advice would be really helpful
Thanks Steve

Hello Steve,
You have been through a lot with your knee.

I do remember one person here with a hinged knee. She isn't around at the moment, but she was very satisfied with it.

I'm going to ask @Josephine , our Nurse Director, to advise you. She is the one who will know the most about this.

Hi colesy, an welcome to BoneSmart! I can imagine you will need a constrained implant after all that as I doubt there's much left in your knee by know!

The constrained hinge looks like this

hinged 1-horz.jpg
rotating hinge 2.jpg

You can see on the left image that there is a stem that goes from the top part into the bottom part - that's what constrains it or prevents sliding of the femur in any direction. But the image on the far right shows how the centre pin does allow some natural rotation.

These are pretty sturdy implants and should last a very long time.

Thanks for the reply Josephine I was wondering I'm only 44 years old
Is the rehab the same as a standard tkr and what would be the expected life expectancy of this implant ?

I think the rehab would be very similar and I con't see any reasons why that implant shouldn't last as long as any other type - which can be 30 years, or even more.

I'm new to this site and finding the information great
I'm just trying to get as much knowledge as I can to give my new knee every chance
My surgeon was very reluctant to do it for me my age being one issue and at my age concerned that the hinged knee would not last
Prior to accident I was very active and fit boxing being my biggest passion
Would a hinged knee allow me to get back to this and other sports ?
Thanks for any advice given it's greatly appreciated

coolesy,
I have a hinged knee as does @RestAssured , we are both very happy with ours. They are stable and we can do anything we want. IMO it will last as long as any knee replacement.
The most important decision you will make is picking a skilled surgeon specializing in complex joint reconstruction, or revisions, who does a lot of TKR's. They have the the education and experience to best address your knee challenges.

There's this article to tell you that Pre-op interviews - what's involved? and pre-ops are usually done a few days before the surgery. Any longer than a week and the blood results become invalid and have to be done again. I've had instances of getting the pre-op date before I knew the surgery date. I always rang the surgeon's secretary and asked her when it was! Sneaky but you can do it too!
