Did any of you experience high blood pressure prior to surgery? I have been taking medication for about 3 years for border line high blood pressure. It was around 125/85 on the average. Now after surgery and no more pain from the bad knee it is around 80/60. My doctor said if it stays there he is taking me off the med. He feels it could have been because of the underlying pain I was in that set off the high blood pressure and now that is out of the picture I could be settling down to where it should be. More good news to me.

Cool! Mine bounces between normal and wanting to be a problem. Whatever helps.

For sure pain makes your BP rise. It's one of the signals we use in the theatre. If a patient's BP rises when they are under GA, it means the anaesthetic is getting too light. If in the recovery, we know they are in pain before they can tell us!

I have high blood pressure and was on maximum dosages of 3 different antihypertenisve agents. In the hospital I ended up being hypotensive and they had to stop all of them for awhile. They restarted two of them. So far my doctor has not had to add back the 3rd one.

I do think pain is a big factor.

Good luck

Simon

Fear is the thing that sets my BP going up. My norm is 120/70-130/80. When I went in for my MUA last Monday it was 180/90, returning to normal when it was over!!

Another thing to consider is that in some people NSAIDs can raise blood pressure.
So if you were taking a bunch of ibuprofen/naproxen before TKR and now are taking
less it could lower your blood pressure as well

Hi Ed. Nice to see ya around! Still doing well, I hope!

Nice, huh? That IS the reason you had it done, right? My new knee is now my "good" knee. I am going for long walks, riding my bicycle, went snorkeling and sailing while on vacation in Mexico. It was soooo worth it. I am now doing re-hab after the 'scope on my other knee and trying to get it strong and hoping the OA in that knee doesn't progress as fast as the first knee did.
Enjoy your summer!

Good point on the NSAIDS. Hi Ed, missed you. glad the knee is good. Don't you miss us?
