you came to the right place. The folks here will be so helpful and full of support. I had knee replacement not hip but know of several that have had it and they are so glad they did. Their life is back to normal and they can do what they want.

Jo and Jamie will be able to help and I am sure they will be on soon to advise along with the others.

Good look.

Welcome to Bonesmart, Reene! One of the best parts of the forum is that there always seems to be members in your general age range with your prticular concerns! Our friend. Melissa (Young M) fits your category and you may want to ask her some questions! Rest assured, we've all been riddled with anxiety at one time or another! Ask away! You'll be delighted with all the empathetic members you will "meet" here! Post often! You'll be feeling better before you know it! :)

Hi Reene, I am a kneesie so I cant help with your questions, sorry. But welcome. You couldnt ask for better people , then in this forum . They are so helpful. But good luck to you, I hope you feel better soon. You will be just fine. Even us kneesies get nervous. I surely know I did. ............Kim

Reene,
WElcome. You have heard we have one recent hippy who is your age. She just went back to work, but hopefully will check soon. You can read some of her past posts, she is our YoungM.
I had my hip replaced last year. No more pain. I do not know what the initials stand for as far as your diagnosis. I have recently been put on prednisone myself.
The hip replacement once you get a qualified, good surgeon is pretty easy. It will only make your life better. It has such a positive outcome , I am amazed and thrilled every day with my new hip. I would not even think twice about getting the other one done if and when it needs it.

It is totally normal to be scared. It is unknown, unexpected and major surgery. The first 4 days are the hardest, then all easier after that with improvements so quickly, then back to better than normal!!!
post any specific questions and look through this forum as well
Welcome

Hi, Reene! Welcome to the BoneSmart family. We are here to provide support for you both before and after surgery and to address any questions or concerns you might have. We have had several forum members that needed hip replacements at a young age like you. It works wonders, so don't be afraid. But...that said, EVERYONE has some fear before the operation. That's normal, but a lot of the fear comes from not having enough information about what you will be going through and why you need to have this done. Hopefully the forum members can help with that support that allows you to become more excited than anxious.

Hi and Welcome! I'm fairly new here myself....much older than you, but will be having my RTHR (rt. hip) replaced next Tuesday, May 26th. I too am nervous, but this site has been EXTREMELY helpful. There's always someone to address your concerns and offer encouragement. As was mentioned before, read other threads and you'll get lots of information.

Good luck to you and keep posting...we'll be here!:thmb:

I wish I had a dollar for the number of times Ive read the word "scared" and "surgery" in the title of a thread. Its normal, natural and expected to experience fear of the unknown. And as a young person of course you want to find love and have a family....and all of this is possible with a hip replacement. ....I suspect more probable than when you are unable to get out and socialise and meet cute, eligible guys.
You are young and you deserve to live a full and happy life....embrace the day and be brave.....so many of us have faced the fear and anxiety and are now on the other side to a fuller life!....you can do it too
Incidentally in the hospital I was at, there was a kid (aged 15) who had a hip replacement.....youth is on your side....you'll do brilliantly...just be patient

Have you looked into hip resurfacing at all? At only age 26, you should see if this would be suitable instead of a total hip replacement.

There is a hip resurfacing forum on this site which can inform new members of this alternative procedure.

That is a very young age to be contemplating this, Renee. I don't blame you for being disconcerted. However, I can tell you for sure that the outcome will be this:

~ you will get back your life
~ you will be able to function normally once the healing and rehab period is over
~ you will be able to do almost anything you want to do

AND

~ you will do all of that without any pain!

Doesn't that sound great?

I think it would be good if you explored all alternatives as hippain has suggested but I think if you have had this occur because of being on steriods, then hip resurfacing will not be suitable.

Nevertheless, many young adults before you - and I do mean many! - have had THRs at your age so it's not an uncommon thing at all. In fact I have nursed some that were 19 years old! Just imagine that! And they did just great - full mobility and activity. It was a joy to see them.

If you have any specific questions that are concerning you, please ask away - anaesthetic, post-op pain, rehab, PT - we can speak on all of those and more.

Thank you all so much for your advice and encouragement am realli glad to be part of the family Is sure is the place i need to be now i feel ike am not alone. Hi Renee,
I am new to this forum as well. I am a critical care nurse and found myself exactly where you find yourself today....young (relatively young for me) and debilitated from hip problems. I work 2 jobs as a nurse and have little kids to care for at home. My hip arthritis came on quick and within 1 year I was bone-on-bone and practically wheelchair bound. I couldn't sleep and didn't tolerate pain medication. I was told that a THR was my only option. I was terrified. I could not imagine why I needed the head and neck of the femor cut away when the problem was strictly due to lack of cartilage. Since they cannot grow new cartilage yet I looked for other options. I found out about hip resurfacing where the head of the femor is shaped to accept a new metal surface (like crowning a tooth) and the acetabulum is also replaced with a metal cup. The size of the "ball" is about the same as a natural hip. As a critical care nurse I thorougly researched hip resurfacing and made my choice. I opted for hip resurfacing over a THR almost 3 years ago and I could not be happier! I am just as active now with my 2 jobs as before the hip deteriorated. I was evan able to go back to school to earn a post-master's certificate as an advanced practice nurse (for cardiac surgery). The university I attended was huge and I had to do much walking....something I could have not done without the surgery. Hip resurfacing gave me back my active lifestyle. I work out regularly on my elliptical and recumbant. I can care for my two grandkids (whom I have custody of, ages 10 and 4). One huge benefit for me is that if I should ever need a revision of my resurfaced hip is that I still have the natural bone of the femor intact and could have THR someday, if needed. Have you had a conversation about resurfacing with your orthopedic surgeon? My first surgeon didn't do resurfacing so I found one that did both procedures to get some straight-forward answers so I could decide for MYSELF which procedure was best for me.

Best wishes to you!

Renee's purpose in posting this thread was to talk to people who might help her be less fearful of hip surgery. She appreciated the information about hip resurfacing and plans to look into it and discuss it with her doctor. (See posts #1 and #11)

Rather than debate the merits of hip resurfacing on this thread, I hope members can please offer support to Renee for whatever procedure she and her doctor decide will be best for her.

Renee, even though I am not a "hippy" (I had a knee replacement), I know exactly how you feel. EVERYONE is nervous about electing to have major surgery to repair a bad joint. You are not alone in these feelings and you have plenty of folks here who can tell you the same thing - they were worried and second guessing their decision right up to surgery day.

Especially because of your young age, you deserve to have a life without pain. Things will be better for you after surgery. Do your research. Talk to your doctor (or several doctors if you want second or even third opinions). And post here for support any time you would like to chat. We'll always be here for you to help with questions and concerns.

We are all here for you and have been in your position in one way or another. I actually did get excited the week before my surgery. My hip is the best. Good luck to you. Remember the pain meds on time, the stool softeners on time, ask for extra!!!

I remember the day at the hospital when everyone seemed to emerge in my room. I had so many questions, I wanted to see my doc's tools. I wanted to make sure the anesthesiologist did not knock me out before I got to the OR. I remember how bright it looked. I at that point wanted to watch the show!!!! I was truly excited and with good reason. A few uncomfortable moments, not realizing my leg was going to weigh 5,000 pounds when I woke up. All new learning experiences. I would not hesitate one second when the left hip goes.
I know it is hard , but do try to relax

reene84: sorry to hear you are having joint failures and pain. You mentioned that you have had to take prednisone for MCTD - is that "Mixed Connective Tissue Disease?"

What has caused your hip to fail? Did your doctor give you a diagnosis? I have been diagnosed with AVN (avascular necrosis), also referred to as osteonecrosis. It's not clear what caused the AVN to occur, even though there are some attributable factors, previous use of prednisone being one of the likely suspects.

My right hip failed (collapsed), the pain was excruciating to say the least. My two shoulders and left hip show disease (MRI's and xrays) but so far have not presented any real problem.

I'd be interested to hear what your cause of pain is.

Best of luck to you.
