We are all too concerned about how long it will take us to "finish the race." The race that I am writing about is, of course, the speed in which we all will return to "normalcy" after our surgery.

If we look at TKR recovery as a race, we must not keep track of the time that it takes...as long as we finish the race, we are truly winners. Do you know of anybody who ran a marathon? By merely finishing, they "won." We are all running our own marathons!

Consider Derek Redmond, the 26 year-old runner from Great Britain; in Barcelona, he blew out his hamstring. After falling to the track in agony, track officials and security people told him to stop; but, with his father's help, he finished the race. By mearly finishing the race, he was a champion. Our race is not measured with time...it is measured in other ways. You are all champions!

Please read the following article from the NY Times about Derek--- I feel we need to understand that his attitude needs to be OUR attitude.

Here is the video what what happened. Just like Derek's father, we are all here to help each other when we fall...

Oh my! Ref, thanks for posting that. What a wonderfully inspirational message.

BTW, I was reduced to tears.

Thanks Ref,
That was perfect timing for me. I had a very rough time yesterday with a walk around the block.
I have run some marathons and my first an ultra marathon. I never cared about my time!!! You are right, I just wanted to cross the finish line that day.
Thanks so much for that. i think that needs to be on the fridge!!
