Good evening all

I posted quite a while ago about the pain I was getting following my met smiles knee implant
I’m still in so much pain with it.

But unfortunately November 2019 I broke my hip, my new surgeon a&e did not want to put in the normal hip replacement due to the long “nail” part of my existing implant - it goes nearly all the way up my femur

so he ended up putting in three cannulated screws

Anyway it now needs a proper replacement as I have now gotAvascular necrosis in my hip too and it’s collapsing.
Has anyone had a successful hip replacement with the met smiles implant in place please

Hi, @sandyw.....I'm so sorry to read of this latest challenge you're facing.

I'm going to tag @Jaycey to help you. She's in the UK and may be able to guide you to a specialist who might be more likely to have done a hip replacement with the met smiles implant. You need a surgeon who has lots of experience with reconstruction and revisions, in case there are some issues that must be dealt with concerning your knee. I don't see that you have much choice about having your hip replaced and it should be just fine. The right surgeon can get this done for you. And hopefully, you can also work with him on your ongoing pain from your knee replacement.

I see that your signature indicates a TKR on September 12, 2016. Was that knee ever revised? Usually the met smiles implant is used as a revision implant. If you've had any additional procedures on your knee, I'd like to get them into your signature.

@sandyw In May of 2019 Josephine recommended you see Paul Allen at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Did you see him? He also does hip replacement.

@jacey I unfortunately had to have a gallbladder removal op in June 19 and then broke my hip in November 19 so wasn’t able to see anyone

@Jamie following the original accident in 1988 where I was on traction for four months, I’ve had two major operations which were osteotomys

I still stand by Jo's recommendation. Paul Allen has both private and NHS practice. A good route is to schedule a private consultation (if you can afford it) and then get on the consultant's NHS list for surgery. Unfortunately the wait time for orthopaedic procedures is now pretty significant everywhere due to covid!

I have, what I think are nerve issues which started when I had my knee implant surgery, my toes started to curl. Now the circulation is incredibly poor and the pain is worse. Knee guy says it’s the hip and the hip guy says it’s my back!! It now radiates down the whole leg and I’m concerned I could loose my toes. Do you think Paul Allen could possibly look at the back too?

No, he will be hips and knees only. You would need a spinal surgeon to look at your back. But I would start with someone looking at your hip. I had spinal issues for years and it turned out some of it was a bad hip.

@sandyw Hi Sandy. Sorry to hear of your tough challenges. I will share that I too have foot, leg numbness and low back pain that got worse after two surgeries. My OS said it was unrelated to my LKTR post surgery. I'm in the middle of diagnostics with a neurologist and hope to have a diagnosis by end of month. I'm having a EMG nerve study and lumbar MRI. This will determine what's next (back specialist ?). I also had my circulation checked and bad veins closed off by vascular dr prior to knee surgery. Yes, all worrisome and has made recovery tougher...I am so tired of medical stuff! Am trying to focus on living and what I can do in between.

It's possible that the poor circulation is responsible for your nerve issues. You may need to see a vascular surgeon about this.

My husband had very poor circulation to his lower leg and nerve pain was one of the things it caused.
Now surgery has improved his circulation, the nerve issues in his foot area have resolved.

Sandy, these are all excellent suggestions. I'm sorry that you may need to deal with so many different doctors, but these are all highly specialized areas and seeing the various doctors one at a time is the only way to eliminate possible causes and get to the real problem. It can be very time consuming, but totally worth it in the end when the right person sees you and is able to properly diagnose the issue. update

Good morning all

an update, I saw Paul Allen and it was worth every penny as you can see in his letter apparently I am “delightful, slim and fit” !! Did loads for my self esteem!

Yesterday I also had a date now, via my original nhs consultant, for my hip replacement on the 15th July
Mr Allen could not do anything until September the earliest and would cost £12k min
