The concensus is in,,,,,,we all want you GLITTERING again!

Hi Glitter,
If your incision is in the front, sound like you had direct anterior, where there are usually few, if any, restrictions. I had that approach Oct. 30 & went home with NO restrictions at all, including side/stomach sleeping. Reality was that I couldn't stand to comfortably sleep on the operated side until about 4 weeks out, when the incision tenderness began to abate.

You should check with your OS's office, of course, but sounds like your buttock/groin pain is par for the course. I had it too, at about the same time--it's your muscles finally waking up and protesting being stretched and spread apart during the surgery. My doc didn't prescribe ANY PT, but I found certain stretching exercises that helped. Check with your PT as well.

I think we all want to believe that the only recovery path is straight up until we get to "normal," but in truth, that path meanders up and down a bit. You should, of course check out anything you're worried about with your OS, but otherwise, just go along for the roller coaster ride!

Okay - so you're light on restrictions - that's good. But it's very common to get various ligament/muscle inflammations because of the PT/exercises you've been doing. If this be the case, the recommended routine is

Cut back a bit on the exercises that make the pain worse
Ice
Anti-inflammatories
Rest

When the pain has resided a bit, you can start building up again.

are blood thinners standard after surgery? how long?

The only blood thinners I was on was one aspirin each day for the first 6 weeks. After that - nothing. But I guess each OS has different post-op protocols so just be guided by him.

I had lovenox injections for 10 days. I nurse came by at home to show me how to give myself the last few.

I imagine blood thinners depend on the size and age of the patient, general health as well??
Rachel

No - I don't think so Rachel (I might be wrong, in which case Jo feel free to correct me!) - I think they are fairly standard precautions for everyone. I was more than happy to take the aspirin daily, and wear my compression stockings, cos the last thing I wanted was a clot!
I think the type of blood thinner varies from OS to OS, but from what I've gathered - most will want you on SOMETHING for those first few weeks.

Peta

It's 100% surgeon's preference and nothing more!
