I had THR on both hips, left on June 07, right on Septemper 07, I have been doing fine, the pain before surgery was unbearable, after my left replacement, I was unable to do PT because of the pain in the right one.
I have a question, the left one it will be one Year next month, feels funny, like a lump on the side near the incision, can't say I have pain, but slight discomfort and aware of something there, as for the other one done in September, not a problem, I had MOM for both, uncemented.
Any answers will be appreciated.

Hello, Lilly - welcome to BoneSmart.

You will need to give me more information before I can offer an opinion. Like ....

- how big is the lump?
- is it hard or soft?
- can you move it around with your fingers or is it fixed like it is attached to the underlying tissues?
- has the surgeon or your doctor seen this lump, and if so, what did they have to say about it?

Hello Josephine,

Thank you for your reply, ok at first the lump, I was told by my OS was a hematoma, soft and flesh like, I always believed that an hematoma had color like when you bang yourself against something, and he told me he would eventually go away, that was 8 months ago, as I says, it does not hurt, just when walking I feel it and it make me thinks that something is wrong with the hip, Friday went for X Rays, again, don't worry , everything is fine, but can an X ray shows everything, like soft tissues.
When I push on it it goes away and come right back, can not move it like a lump, and is along side my insicion at the end to be correct.
Ask any more questions, thank you for helping.

Lily,

Ah! That makes it clearer. Haematomas are not like bruises - they can be quite deep and so the colour doesn't show through. As a rule, they do dissipate with time but other times the blood can get what we call 'organised' which is to say it turns into a fibrous mass instead of getting absorbed by the body. Over time the mass turns into a kind of scar tissue which can stay there pretty much forever. If it's a problem the only recourse is probably to have it surgically removed like any other fatty lump. It would be a minor operation but probably needing to be done under general anaesthetic if it's very big. However, there is still time for it to shrink some more so it is not so noticeable.

Other than that, I would urge you to stop worrying about it and eventually you will (mostly) forget it is there.

Hello Josephine,

Thank you so much, your answer reassured me so much, after asking my surgeon few times and him not be willing to take too much of his time, I had never got an answer about hematoma, make sense, I will wait a little longer, since is really painless.
Call me worry, I have always imagine the worst.

Take care.

Lily.

You're not alone in that, honey. Even I worry about such stuff on occasion!
