Hello everyone I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself as T and I was told today that the necrosis is back in my left shoulder and that I would most likely be looking at a total shoulder replacement for the left shoulder. Awaiting confirmation from MRI.

So just a little background for guys I was diagnosed in August of 2023 with osteonecrosis of the left shoulder. In September of 2023 I had a core compression with a bone graft done and it held for about 8 months. Of course the first couple of months was painful it did get better so you guys that have just had it done, hang in there. And the pain started back about 3 months ago and now I can barely lift my arm up, let alone over my head so just hoping that this works for me this time for a little bit longer at least.

From the x-rays that were taken today the doctor said that necrosis had come back at the top of the shoulder and there was cracks in it, so he is concerned about collapse. But did state that I was in a pre-collapsed condition.

I look forward to any advice, insight, and wants to come what to expect, just any advice is much appreciated and will definitely be taken to heart. Just one other piece of information I do live alone, is that going to be an issue for me after surgery?

Thank you for your time and attention
T

Hello and Welcome! Thanks for joining us, T!
I am sorry for the pain you're dealing with. I don't have experience in shoulder replacement but wanted to greet and welcome you. I am sure others will stop by to share advice. I will leave a link to threads of those that experienced Standard Shoulder Replacement for you to check out if interested.
Best Wishes!

Welcome to BoneSmart, @TN1216. Sorry you are facing another surgery so soon. , Do read through the threads in the link that Layla shared and reach out to other members. You'll find lots of support here.

@TN1216 Welcome to BoneSmart! I've had 2 shoulder replacements and think you can manage fine on your own, though it is nice to have someone there if you have anyone available for a week or two. Or have friends or neighbors willing to check in with you and run errands. Since shoulders are not weight bearing joints (thank goodness) there is no mobility issue to worry about. I suspect the recuperation period will be similar to what you went through with the previous surgery. My experience was I was in a padded bolster sling for about 6 weeks then went to PT for a couple of months to strengthen the shoulder and restore range of motion. You can take the sling off to bathe, dress, and do some gentle swing the arm exercises. Yes it was painful for a while but the pain lessened gradually over time. Icing the shoulder helps as does taking pain medication as prescribed by your surgeon. Sleep may be a problem for a while as it is hard to get comfortable -- putting pillows under the shoulder can help. Some find sleeping in a reclining chair works, others prefer their own beds.

Do you have the replacement scheduled yet? Do let us know when that will take place and we will add it to your signature.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. My MRI is scheduled for Saturday the 9th of November I follow up with my surgeon on the 12th at which time the surgery will be set and I'll be able to give you that information. I do have somebody that can be with me or as long as I need so I'm glad that isn't an issue now. And I've been working through getting all of the threads where that were posted for me I thank you are so much

Extremely anxious, I go tomorrow to get MRI results and schedule TSR if needed. My appointment is at 10:10 EST. I'll edit this all info when I get back.

Ok TSR scheduled for 11/25/24 starting physical therapy the very next morning. I have a pre-anesthesia appointment on Friday. First follow up appointment is Dec 11. It's a regular TSR.

Good luck for your pre-op appointment tomorrow. Not too long until surgery. I hope time flies and wish you comfort as you wait.

Bad news, surgery cancelled until full and thorough work up after having a heart attack on the 19th.

Oh goodness, I am so sorry. Your health and recovery from the heart attack is most important right now. I hope you have a strong support system and wish you the best as you're recovering. Hugs :console2:

Oh no, I'm sad to learn this. Best wishes for a good recovery.

My total shoulder replacement is rescheduled for January 13th I'm not sure what time yet they'll call me the Friday before. all of my pre-op appointments post-op appointment and PT have already been scheduled as well. fingers crossed this goes good and I actually get to have surgery this time!

@TN1216 It is so good to hear that your shoulder surgery was rescheduled! Yes fingers crossed for smooth sailing through the holidays (plus fun and festivities) :yes!:

@TN1216 This is great news! Hopefully, this time will take. That was my biggest worry before surgery-something would cause it to be postponed. It’s nice you can enjoy the holidays. Blessings that all goes according to plan.

Oh what a relief to see your post!
