I was reading something about a new non-electric heating pad product the other day & the fine print said not to use if you have artificial joints. That made me wonder--are regular, old-fashioned heating pads OK to use in the hip area? Metal obviously can absorb & conduct heat significantly more than bone, so perhaps that's why the precaution . . .

Anyone been warned by OS or PT?

Never heard that before. I suppose it might matter how the heat was generated. Was it a website - can you give me a link?

I started to use a heating pad with a wet long wide sponge on top of it (it came that way). This gave me moist heat and my PT said it was ok to do so. I was nearly at 6 weeks with my new knee before I tried it.
The reason I did try it was because the cold gel pack was making my knee so stiff that I could hardly do my exercises so we decided to change the pattern around. It worked great for me and still is..
Hope this gives you another view...Carol

Sorry, Jo--think it was online, but one of those ad sidebars on some exercise or PT site. If I run across it again, I'll post.

I haven't heard a thing one way or the other. The only warning I had was when I had my MRI of the knee to let them know if my hip got hot.

ahhh I never realized that when you get a MRI with a new joint that it would get hot. I just thought it was bad because of the magnet reasons. I am glad I read that. I have not seen anything about heating pads either in my travels on the net
