THR Happy to be past the surgery

I got an injection in my right knee and everything is better. My balance, the shuffle step, the tiredness - all better. My fall with the dogs aggravated my knee (fortunately not my new hip). So we will see how it goes over the next few months. For now I’m happy.

Excellent news!

Great news, Freyagirl.
Now you can enjoy a beautiful Autumn with a smoother gait.
Happy Saturday!
@Freyagirl

The knee injection continues to work and without that pain I find that I am doing really well. I’m back to getting in and out of chairs without even thinking about it and walking through the house very comfortably. I have gotten to work on some projects of cleaning out closets and other tasks I haven’t been able to do for a couple years. I am hoping that the knee injection calms my inflammation and keeps my knee not very strong but without much pain. I am done with surgery for a while. We are off to close our cabin and I’m happy to actually be helpful, but sad to say goodbye to the lake. Winter is coming, freeze warnings in Minnesota last night.

Glad to read that the injection has helped with your knee pain, @Freyagirl. That's a really good sign.

Enjoy your last trip of the season to the cabin. Just be careful not to overdo things now that you feel better. :wink:

Well drat. So much confidence after my knee injection and then boom. I was in line for check-in To a flight to Palm Springs and tripped over my luggage. A wheel chair got me to the gate and on the plane. Sitting squashed into the plane seat let the knee swell. However, over the week of swimming and relaxing the knee got better. I was able to do short walks to overlooks and around a museum. It was a great vacation that was postponed since last year before surgery. Although I wasn’t completely mobile I was much much better than before replacing both hips. I got to swim every day in the warm pool and can tell that my strength has improved. Then we returned to chilly Minnesota after its first snowfall.

Oh no! I can't imagine how you felt at that fall. Thank goodness it swiftly mended itself and you were able to really enjoy your warm weather sunshine!

Ugh...what a bummer, Freyagirl! So sorry to read of your fall. Thankfully you made the best of your vacay and still enjoyed it. Glad to read it improved over the week.
Leaving Palm Springs for cold Minnesota was a little tough I'm guessing. I'm close to you geographically so I experienced the snow also. It's too early for snow!
Have a great weekend!
@Freyagirl

It’s been more than six months since the last of my two hip surgeries. I’ve had a bunch of ups and downs, literally. my age, and the length of time that I was unable to move comfortably before the surgeries has left me pretty weak. However little by little, I am gaining strength and getting back to a more normal and physically active lifestyle. I have been catching up on some projects that have been waiting for my attention for about three years. I wondered at some point whether I would ever get back or even get partially back to feeling good again and, thankfully, I do. When we were in Palm Springs, I slept on my sides on a pretty hard bed and realized my incisions are not completely back to normal. I would wake up in the night uncomfortable and have to turn over. My mattress topper at home has made my bed comfortable even for my slightly tender hips. I can’t walk long distances or stand for a long time, but I can usually get in and out of the car, walk around museums for a little while, sit in restaurants, and get down on the floor to play with my grandchildren. If you are in the first weeks or months after surgery and feeling discouraged, please give yourself time. It takes much longer than you might think, but there is a future of feeling good again.

What a great post, @Freyagirl! So glad you are feeling good again!

Thanks for giving hope and inspiration to those who are still in the early months of recovery. :flwrysmile:

Great post & sorry to hear about the trip over the luggage, what a way to start vacation.
Otherwise sounds as though Palm Springs was just what you needed.
We travel to US Virgin Islands every February from New England & I sure understand how nice that sun & warm water can revive you! No aches or pains for 2 weeks!

Back from my vacation I am getting a a lot accomplished. It’s a delight to be able to bend over, crouch down, run the vacuum, empty the dryer, carry laundry and grocery bags. I can shop in stores instead of online and easily go out for lunch. My sciatic nerve pain has quieted and my nerves made numb from the surgery are recovering. My balance slowly improves and I’m doing Water aerobics twice a week. I’ve packed away my ice machine for potential knee surgery sometime long in the future.

This is just FANTASTIC to read! Vacation + normal life = success.

@Freyagirl oh my, what a wonderful update. You are back to doing normal things and feeling good. Amazing what vacation, relaxation and a little bit of time can do. So happy for you!

Last year at Thanksgiving I was barely able to do anything around my house due to so much hip pain. After having both hips replaced I had a great holiday and am in the middle of readiness for replacing carpet in the main part of my house. Packing up knickknacks and dishes, moving small furniture and lamps, sorting through stuff I haven’t been able to bend down to see for years. AND NO HIP PAIN! I’m tired - but I passed the 77 year mark so I expect to be worn out. I think of the anxiety I had last year before the surgery and the frustration and pain. Everything is better. I haven’t seen my cane in months, my ice machine is loaned out to another hippie, and unfortunately I lost my grabber. I’m truly “thankful “ this Thanksgiving.

Hi Freyagirl! Nice to hear from you and a belated Happy Birthday!
Your update should be an inspiration to those following behind you. I love a grateful heart and you clearly have one. I hope you have a beautiful holiday season and many blessings in the New Year!
