Dear All,
It's me again with another kind of strange question. I am noticing quite a bit of hair loss after my btkr. I am now 4 weeks post op. I started noticing it in the rehab hospital -- about 10 days post op. Some days are worse than others but it's starting to worry me. I am a 40 year old female in very good health except for the knees, so I can't think of any other reason that I'd be losing so much hair. At first, I thought it was the coumadin but I stopped taking that about 6 days ago.

Has anyone had this happen?
Does anyone have any advice for how to stem it (vitamins, etc.)?

Thanks!

I would think like you, it would be a reaction or side effect to one of the medications I was taking. I do know that prednisone causes hair loss. Are you taking that per chance?
If not google the ones you are taking and look to see if hair loss is a side effect of any of them. JMO
Best,
Crystal

Missyc,

A number of things can cause excessive hair loss. For example, about 3 or 4 months after an illness or a major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. This hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and is temporary. Some medicines can cause hair loss. This type of hair loss improves when you stop taking the medicine. Medicines that can cause hair loss include blood thinners (also called anticoagulants), medicines used for gout, medicines used in chemotherapy to treat cancer, vitamin A (if too much is taken). This is just a couple of reasons, please don't worry about it at this time of your recovery.

God Bless,
Rick

Something similar happened to me a few years ago. My internist suggested I see a dermatologist specializing in hair loss. I brought in a sample of the hair and was told the hair loss was due to a prolonged fever I had had a few months earlier. I was relieved to find out it wasn't permanent. He had me use a special shampoo and conditioner for awhile. It took about 6 months but my hair grew in even thicker than before.

My sister (now 75) has suffered very bad hair loss, almost the the point of male pattern. She spent ages trying to find the cause. She has diabetes, on metformin, under-active thyroid, on thyroxin, and numerous other situations that COULD cause it but no answers. She bought wigs and all sorts.

Then she just left it alone and suddenly it's started growing again! Never did find out what it was all about. Very odd.
