I fractured my right hip when I was 27 years old riding a gas powered skateboard. I could not believe when they said I needed surgery, I thought I dislocated my hip or something to that effect. Anyway, they put three screws in my hip and let me on my way. I am a drummer in a rock band and recovered and was fine for about a year, then the necrosis to my femoral head started to ache everyday.

I went to the OS and he told me to wait as long as possible to get a thr so I waited two agonizing years. My family was telling me to just get it done so I could at least not be in pain in my prime years.

I finally got the OS to do the surgery on Aug 20th 2009 and I am six weeks post op. I feel better but still walk funny but I can drum which makes me happy. I feel alone because I am 31 now and do searches on the internet for some positive feedback from young people like myself with this similar problem and cannot find many cases.

Is anyone else out there my age with this problem, post me back and let me know your story!

Hi and Welcome Im a knee but I wish you the best you'll be back having all that fun in no time.............Best wishes.............) here are others you age or around it......thy will post soon.......Gotta love that skateboard.......I agree get in done then you have the rest of you life nd wont have all the nagging pain.....The sooner the better..............)

hey i am here bilateral at age 23. I used a supplement given by a gym instructor. Then came the biggest disaster of my life. Later it turned out be be some steroid mixed supplement. I suffered from the major side effect of steroids the "Avascular necrosis" of both hips. i suffered badly for 3 years. finally i had surgery done to my both hips at 23. A ceramic on highly cross linked polyethelene type replacement.

Just remember there is always a fool below u and an intellect ahead of u in any case.

My life got screeeeeeewwwwwwedddddddd

Hello from a 26 year old who is now 15 days post-op from a RTHR! I had arthritis due to dysplasia which was then magnified by 23 years of dancing. Who cares how old you are? :hissy:Its the old saying of 'Age is mind over matter...if you don't mind then it doesn't matter". There are quite a few of us on this board who are in our 20's and 30's. I understand your frustration though because there are very few resources for us but I have been very happy with our little community here on BoneSmart. Everyone of all ages and types of surgery has been willing to reach out, comfort, support, and cheer on. :wub:So enjoy the fact that you are able to drum again and that by having the surgery you have regained your life back. I had a lot of people tell me to wait as long as I could to have the surgery because of my age. But then I'd just be throwing those months and years away to a lot of pain, pill popping, and restricted mobility. So rest and recover but then go out and live your life!!:thmb:

Hip Hip Hooray!

Hiya, I'm 35 and was also told to wait as long as possible, so left it 3 years, and now wonder why. I'm three weeks out on Friday (LTHR) and its fab! When you say you walk funny, is that how it feels, or is it still difficult to walk without the strange limp? I'm desperately trying to square up my hips when I walk, cos they have been on a slant for so long, so walking feels funny (but good), but everyone tells me it looks better than I have done for years!

Good luck with the recovery and the drumming!

Welcome!

I'm 30 and having THR October 22nd. I also felt like i was alone and found this place-THANK GOD! I come here every day and aside from learning something new (in preparation to my surgery) I leave feeling confident about my decision. I was actual told for years to have THR and I am the one who pushed it off for years! You found a great place where you can relate to people and it's amazing! From my research all I have heard is positive feedback so I am just as excited as I am scared. And look at YOU-6 weeks post op and YOU ARE drumming! See, for me-that's more positive feedback :)

WELCOME!

Welcome to BoneSmart, dude! There's a lot of young hip and knee patients on here so you're no longer alone. Walking funny at 6 weeks is par for the course. Just make sure your PT does some gait training on you, ok?

Gas powered skateboard - hmmm - you like to live dangerously?

And who's your star drummer? I used to love listening to Gene Krupa but that just shows how old I am!

I'm 32 and six months post op. I am still not raving about it like most of the stories around here, but you are not alone. There are lots of "young" people here. I'm glad things are going well for you!! Keep drumming and healing!!

Welcome to BoneSmart, Youngdude....so glad you're one of us now. Like others have said, we have many young folks on the forum. These days it's quite common, although there still are those surgeons who want you to waaaaiiit for some magical time to be fixed.....you'll be amazed at what a difference this will make.

I am 45, Started having complications of AVN at 42, I am 10 days post op uncemented THR-right, It was uncemented so I was told 25% wt bearing for 3 weeks the 50% for 3 weeks. It's driving me crazy cuz I'm ready to throw the crutches in the trash and walk on my already.....what are the risks if I do?

rxdawg, I answered your question in another thread.

Hello young dude, I am 37 and was told over 8 years ago that I needed double THR. I am going in this jan - mar depending on my ins. I am really siked and scared at the same time. I want the pain to go away, but I also dont want it getting worse like in some cases here. I have been dealing with the pain way to long.

SOME cases, New Yorker - there are lots and lots that have done just fine, remember. The trouble with forums is they often give a skewed impression as people generally come looking for forums when they have a problem and need advice or help. It means we get a higher ratio of problems showing up than in real life. People who sail through the surgery and have no problems don't come looking for forums to share on! Don't forget that.

hi young dude im also a young thr i had my surgery 16 days ago. i feel really great its one of the best desision ive ever made, im already almost pain free at this early stage so for me having my surgery at 33 does not come into question the fact im going to be pain free and get my old life back is what matters im sure you feel the same.
good luck with your drumming xxx

I now see that josephine, I am reading here for the last week or so and threw in a few questions of my own. I am just getting closer to getting this done and now all the questions and worries come in to play. Once I get the surgery done I will be back here to fill in other curious minds and maybe give some advice. Thanks for reading and (( LISTENING )).:gphg::agree::yrk::thnk:

That would be great! I love members who stick around a bit and share with other newbies. You're an important piece in the forum.

Hey young dude, no worries! You'll be fine and much better off. Not that I'm an expert as I'm only 11 days post op from LTHR, but I know you'll be fine. Mind over matter is much of it.
I'm not as young (46) but I think I still play as young as you do. I too suffered a broken hip from a skateboard a little over a year ago. Same thing. Screw fixation to try to repair but it didn't take.
I wish all of it never happened, but I'm very confident that this procedure will get me very close to back to normal. I will skate again, maybe not the same way or as aggressive, but there are alot of other things I will still enjoy (backpacking, rock climbing, cycling, surfing, etc.) once I'm healed up. Things happen, but we can still continue on.
I've read about alot of young people getting THR's, and I think with today's technology, we should all be fine.
We need to be a bit more cautious now, but that doesn't stop us from doing things we love.
Keep your head up. Dont let your age get you down. You got alot of great things in front of you to do still. Listen to all these youngsters who have posted up on here already.
Rock on! :thmb:

I had my first THR at 30 and it sucked because first my doctor thought he was god. He was terrible and wish i never went to him, but found a much better one a few years later. But during my stay at the hospital for the first THR, they did not have a floor for Orthopedics, or other surgery, i was put on the Geriatrics. And the looks from the nurses when they walked in was utter disbelief at my age, cuz most patients on that floor where 70 or older!! I am now 43 and my last surgery i was on the orthopedics floor!!!! yipeeeeeeee
