I had my pre-op medical at Musgrave Park Hospital Belfast yesterday for my RTHR, two and a half hours. Everything went great right up untill I met the anesthetist. He told me my BMI was 42 and that there would be a risk. He gave me 2 options hold off and lose more weight(he wanted my BMI below 40)or go ahead with the operation. Well I told him I wanted to go ahead with the operation and he said fine and signed the docs. I was sent home with all the info for the operation and a pair of crutches for after the op. So now waiting for date.

Hey Ronnie. I know you want to get this done, I also know your nervous, So Im glad you went a head and signed the papers. Just do what your told by your OS and you will be fine. We will all be here to help you with anything we can you know that. I couldnt remember the surgery date. I sure hope you come back and let us know how you are doing, we will all be waiting. Try to relax, it really will be ok. Many prayers your way.

Doctors! They are legally obliged to 'inform' you. I mean, did he really think you were going to say "Oh sure - I'll put up with this agony a bit longer so I can maybe lose some weight!"

Anyway, mine was 43, my sister's was 45 and I've nursed patients whose BMIs were in the 50s, even one that was 67!!!

Hi Josephine thats really reasuring. I had a feeling it was down to the Doctors covering themselves, he didn't try to talk me out of it. All I have to now is wait for my date. Thanks again!:thmb:

Just got a call from the anesthetist my bloods showed problems with my kidneys, potassium, and other levels are high he has refered this to my G.P. so the op has been cancelled.:sigh:

Oh for heavens sake, Ronnie! What a bummer! But it may just be a blessing in disguise! Go find out what is going on so your doctors can make informed decisions as to your care! THEN you will be more comfortable having your surgery! Keep us posted!!

Ronnie
I am so sorry . Hopefully this is nothing much, but let us know what is happening.

Might be something and nothing, Ronnie. Don't fret about it. But shame about it delaying the op. But they don't do it for fun - best to be safe.

I think taking Diclofenac for the last four years might be causing the problem with my kidneys which is holding up my operation. Has anyone had similar problems, I will be seeing my GP next Wednesday.

Oh! I've heard of similar problems. NSAIDs are a problem like that. They are very efficient but ....

Hope it works out alright for you.

Hi Ron,
I was on Diclofenac about the same length of time, but have had to back off it as it started giving me stomach problems. This was after my hip surgery and apparently there was no problems prior or it would have shown up in my pre-op tests. This is the only prescription med. I take besides Actonel for osteoporosis.
I had stayed on it after the surgery as my other hip was still giving me fits. That, however, is getting taken care of this Thursday so shouldn't need the Diclofenac anymore.

Glenys! Now would be a good time to quit the Actonel! Ask your GP!

Hi Judles,
Am off all meds, vitamins, minerals till after surgery as advised, but am allowed Tylenol. Thought I could do without that till I tried going to sleep last night; had to go take some to take the edge off the pain. Just a few days to go till pain free.
I feel so bad for poor Ronnie that his surgery has been postponed; sounds like he has more underlying problems going on. Do hope they can be remedied shortly where he can join us in the land of the painfree:D

Saw my G.P. he thinks I may have been de-hydtrated the day I went for my pre-op medical. I was on Reductil for weight lose which always made my mouth very dry so dear knows what else it was up to. I am now off Reductil and my G.P. is going to make a new appointment for another pre-op medical. Fingers crosed all goes well.:sct:
