I am now 3 weeks post THR and had my 6th outpatient PT session today. I just had to let you all know that I walked 5 times around the PT room with no cane and hardly any limp when I really concentrated. I am frankly amazed that I could do it. I had been using the cane 100% of the time at home. I can't say enough about supervised therapy. I would have never done this on my own. My PT said that one hospital tried to reduce costs by sending patients home with a DVD showing their exercises as a substitute for outpatient PT. The early dislocation rates shot up 50%. There is no substitute for a skilled, knowledgeable person assisting with early rehab.
I am smiling.

Great post, Gail!!! You're doing SO WELL!! And the story about the hospital you gave was priceless. It's an excellent reason why hospitals and health care systems should not be bottom line driven....or have some non-medical bean counter telling doctors how to treat their patients! (climbing down from soap box now)

Stick with your program. You are certainly doin' it just right!

I should think you are! You are brilliant, my girl! Well done.

Interesting about the dvd and increase in dislocations. Never would have expected that.

thanks Gail....so full of hope! Im going to rehab after surgery, so probably won't get home for almost 3 weeks so hopefully Ill be doing really well by the time I get home with the kids....

Congratulations, Gail! Great progress & it's only going to get better. Keep smiling! :0

Just keep watching those wooden floors of yours!!! :)

Great work Gail!!!

Wow----they actually tried to replace doctors with DVD's? What state are you in?

My brother got laid off from United Airlines (he was an airplane mechanic making $38. an hour), so they could hire people in Saudi Arabia & El Salvadore to do his job for $1.88 an hour! There were two plane crashes blamed on this. The airplane mechanics in El Salvadore did not speak or read English, but the airplane manuals were written in only English!!!

Thanks for all the support and good wishes. I find today that I still want to use my cane when I first get up and even during the day. I am going cane-less for just short periods of time. It is still quite an effort to walk smoothly without the cane. I have to pull together my core muscles and lower body muscles, relax my shoulders and arms and then strike out. I cannot do this well without a lot of mental focus. So although I believe it was a breakthrough yesterday, I'm not ready to throw away the cane just yet.

Gail! Its really not so bad using the cane for a little longer! How is your gait?

I am sorry to derail but what is with all this viagra new postings ???????????? a lot of them .......is that like a spam thing wow thats weird

Judles, My gait is quite smooth even without the cane, but I have to concentrate really hard on tensing the muscles around the hip and abdomen before I head out. I can keep this up for only short periods. As many have said in this forum, it is probably better to keep your gait smooth than to try to give up the assists too soon. It is clear that my muscles haven't recovered from surgery just yet.

Gail....Don't worry! You're making some wonderful progress!! Keep up the positive attitude! :

It was a spammer and I removed all his posts and banned his IP address from the forum. Jo and I try to catch these people before you all see the posts, but sometimes we aren't quite fast enough.
