Bilateral THR Grateful Double Hippy

@Mojo333 ill be curious to see what others say because I've had the same sensation the past few nights. I've been taking allergy meds to sleep. I'm glad that your overall experience has been a positive one.not having that awful pain is pretty amazing, isn't it! I woke up to the sound of rain last week and realized I didn't have a clue it was going to rain. Pre-op my hip would have been stiff and painful before weather changes. It sounds like you are doing really well. I'll look forward to hearing new updates!

I get the same way at the end of the day @Mojo333.

Leg just can't stay comfortable. Shift position and a minute later i have to shift again. Restless leg sounds right. It stinks!

I am on gabapentin, which is for nerves... but i still have this issue many evenings. Its gotta be related to how much we do during the day.

It's not nearly as bad as the pain we lived with before, but it's not a picnic either.

Hopefully it will ease with time. Take care!

Hi @Mojo333
My legs get tired by the end of the day, sort of crampy, calves and the front of my thighs. Of course per usual as it goes for me I have been overdoing it. I will be four weeks this coming Thursday and yes I have been out living life, cleaning my barn helping my boyfriend put a laminate floor in our camp, today for my Encore we are going to the casino in Montreal for the day, we're taking a bus up so there's some sitting and I will be sitting in the casino in between walking around, but it will be a long day… A test for sure… I have no more pain pills so I have to rely on my Tylenol and tough it out. The zingers on the outsides of my thighs are still there but are getting less and less day by day, I still have pain when I first stand up and start to walk sometimes I limp like I did before. Some days are better than others, and I don't limp at all especially if I really concentrate and I have not overdone it. I have my PT evaluation next Thursday and maybe they can work on me a little bit. On a good note I can sleep on either side or my stomach which was a huge milestone. I actually caught myself sleeping with no pillow between my legs and was comfortable and did not dislocate LOL. Have a great day everybody!

Good Morning @Mojo333
I experience that with my surgical leg sometimes in bed as I'm trying to fall asleep. BUT I also experienced it in the same leg pre-surgery.....confusing to me.

I'm going to try some Magnesium Glycinate I've decided. I purchased a few bottles of it for my husband who wakes with those dreadful muscle cramps in his calf. You know the kind that make you bolt out of bed from a dead sleep. I've read if we don't have enough Magnesium, which estimates for Americans show 68% of us are deficient, that our muscles will contract involuntarily causing creepy crawlies, spasms, cramps, restless leg syndrome. I've read you can start with 300 mg and increase until the sensation goes away. You can safely go up to 1000 mg per day. You can take 100-200 mg in the morning and the rest before bed.

Something for you to research yourself and consider, if interested, before resorting to the more high powered stuff which always seems to be a hazzard to some other vital organ of ours. Pharmaceuticals make me uncomfortable.....I like my liver and kidneys and all the other vital organs I was born with and hate to compromise their performance with the negative effects some drugs can cause if I can find a safer alternative.
OK - off my soapbox!

A great day to you without any creepy crawly leg sensations!

PS - An additional benefit most wouldn't mind is it helps promote deeper sleep at night.

Great idea @Layla on the magnesium advice. I use the magnesium oil, it's not an actual oil per say but it's in a spray bottle. They say it's a higher absorption rate by applying magnesium externally this way. I also have a couple ounces in another bottle with a couple drops of lavender and chamomile essential oils mixed in and put on the bottom of my feet for sleep. Though just the magnesium oil by itself is fine. Maybe you could spray some of this on the areas that are causing issues @Mojo333 They say up to a maximum of 8 sprays total a day, a little goes a long ways.

my legs are...don't know how to describe...not exactly painful, but aggravated...really aggravated and aggravating. They won't relax, they constantly feel as if they need to move...akin to what I hear people describe as restless leg syndrome.
You have described Restless legs following surgery very very accurately!
Guess still healing and guessing @Josephine might say due to all activity.
Well not exactly but you are still only 13 weeks out so your legs are still healing and likely to have reaction to increased activity such as work.

No OA excruciating hip pain.
People often say this and I am very puzzled as to why they do. Never tell me you didn't realise that a joint replacement would remove all the arthritic pain? Did you?

I know that should be a no-brainer @Josephine, but it still is incredulous to me. How could that cause me so grief and disappear without any discomfort at my hip.... You're right, kind of dumb...but is still amazing and its a way to remind me this is all the small stuff we are trying not to sweat. Thanks for directing me to the information on restless leg, will try some of those remedies. Never heard of the topical magnesium, have to check that out.

Ok @Mojo333 Congratulations on ambassadorship!:wowspring:and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!:flwrysmile: (nothing can top Minions, so I won't even try!).

I understand your hyper-sensitive legs, but haven't had it as much as you. I am not a food pantry boss, either, so don't have the active work like that. When I'm at work, I'm sitting, which is a whole nother can of worms. And yes, that persisted for 6-8-10 months, the sitting uncomfortably part. And then just segued right into "ow the other hip", dangit. I know people from here who took ice to their office for months. For sitting on...I never did that LOL.

I think it just dumbfounds a person, to have had that pain as a companion for so very long, and then it's gone poof! It does not compute immediately. It's hard to imagine "absence of a pain".

I used to keep a bar of Ivory soap under the bottom sheet in bed for calf cramps. It worked, too.

Thanks @zauberflöte . I've heard the soap under the calf trick..strange thing is it was always ivory soap?? Doesn't Dove work?
Remember I live in the south...I got more folk lore remedies with my hip pain and out there as they were, I tried them . Pain induced psychosis. A Cajun lady who heard me complain about headache asked what I did with my hair after a haircut. I said nothing, I guessed they swept it up.
There you go she says. A bird has obviously kidnapped your hair, made a nest with it, and is sitting on it. Therego...a headache. Also have heard of apple cider vinegar and honey which I have done and liked those benefits...skin, hair. Digestion.
But this feels much different than leg cramps!

I know that should be a no-brainer @Josephine, but it still is incredulous to me
I actually do know what you mena because in the old days, before we routinely used spinals and such, the one thing I always noticed when a hip patient came into recovery was this expression of delight and relief! NO PAIN! All gone! I could see it in their faces!

@Josephine Is there a medication safely used for relief for that specific symptom. Tramadol works also...or is it better to limit the activity more and not rely on the medication. Don't want to mask the true reason for the problem, but not feeling like its totally due to excessive activity. Even with moderate activity, at end of day things don't want to calm down.

Everything we have to offer is in the article I posted previously. That's the best I can do.

Thank you...will review

@Mojo333 I don't know if there is such a thing as a good hospital sitter. I don't know, you sound fairly gung-ho to me. You just had a two-for-one special. Once you figure out you can't hurt it doing normal activities, you will get motivated. I have to have coffee to sit still.

Just leaving swing bed unit she was transferred to ..hopefully will monitor infection and her blood sugar. Waited at local hospital for last 5 hours for transport. It is 30 miles away so I got her situated and am now travelling home. Husband so patient but terrible night driver so I'm just bonesmarting so I don't holler at him all way home. She is stable. Thanks for asking. Congrats on your date...we will be double hippy buds soon.
Please stay well and don't overdo. Much love to you..tomorrow's gonna be a good day

Tried tonic water with quinine for leg cramps...now I know why I don't drink gin and tonic...gin is awful, ditto for the tonic.
Blehk!:skep:

Ask your doctor for a small dose of Valium for leg jumps if it's mega bugging you or a low dose muscle relaxer

When I drank my drink was gin and tonic with lime.

Prayers still for sis. I am glad you're visiting lots

Hugs

Crown and coke...they say gin and tonic it's an acquired taste. I think that means you have drank it so long you forgot how awful it tastes.lol
