Finally, I got the bill from the hospital, almost 7 weeks post op. It was what I expected, about 10%, and a little over 3 grand. I'm not dissapointed, but $3200 for us is quite a feat. Of course, it was well worth it... and we'll pay it gladly. Gonna send 10% every month, and have it paid off within a year, I suppose. Heaven forbid if we had to pay the full cost! Thank goodness for good insurance! I guess...

Hi Dalton
By 10% do you mean the total costs of the hip procedure was $32,000? That is 1/2 what I was quoted last November when I was back visiting my mother in California. And that total did not include PT. After paying the better part of $100,000 over the years and never used my coverage, they denied coverage of my hip replacement. That is when I quit the program, they were going to do their yearly rate increase of 23% to well over $1,000 a month so I quite before the new bill was due. I pay $268 a year now.
Congratulations on getting the bargain on the co-pay and the low(for the US) total cost. Will you be able to retain the same insurance if you leave the Sherif's office for school?

Dalton,
I thought the California charges billed were the most , but most of that just disappears.
My only bill is for $734.00. That is through blue cross ppo

I am in so cal, my hospital billed the ins. con $94,000. Insurance paid $14,000 and as I said above my share is $734

My hospital bill was 27,000, surgeon 3500., Anesthesia 1800., Rehab (5 days) 3000., When all is said and done with PT I estimate total of around 37,000. I live in NYS. My husband has great health insurance coverage. Our maximum out of pocket is 600.00 per year. My surgery was paid in full, as my out of pocket was met long before my surgery. I don't know how we could have done it without health insurance.

Hi Judy
I am confused by the comments. You hospital billed $94k but the company only paid $14k. How do they get by with discounting it $80k? My Kaiser was based in Marin County, just north of San Francisco, so the rates were high simply because they figure residents of that county can afford anything they want to charge...a false assumption. The quote I got last winter was from a Sacramanto hospital and figured Marin would be $30k higher just 100 miles away.

Off crutches over a week now...all ok...

My insurance is blue cross ppo. All of my statements appear like that. The major amount of the billing is discounted or negotiated with the hospitals or providers.
I don't kknow how the providers put up with it all. My spine surgeon quit accepting blue cross last year, but all the other orthopedists in his office still negotiate with them.
I believe my surgeon's bill was $10,000. He was reimbursed $2,000. So far I have not recieved a bill from his office. There is no charge for all my post op care , it is included in the original bill. I have met all of my deductables and copays so pt told me I have nothing to pay there either.

My crutches have been wall ornaments for weeks now.

I just got my bill and the cost was $57K of which I paid $2800. I feel like one of the luckiest people in the world right now.

hey Stanj! Long time no speak...

Yep, my total hospital bill was about 32K, but remember, I live in Mississippi, not California! My house was 70K, is about 1200 square ft. and I bet the same house would cost 3-4X as much in CA.
As far as leaving the Sheriff's Office, I won't do that until next Spring or Summer at the soonest, but unless I pay "Cobra", I'll have to start over with a new provider if I go to school. (Which I'm strongly leaning toward). If I do leave, my Wife will just put me on her plan, and will cost about an extra $200 a month. It would be tough on us for awhile, but worth it for me to go to PT school in the long run. We think that'll probably happen... and of course, I'll have to work a part-time job while going to school; we wouldn't be able to survive on just one Law Enforcement income.

Can I book you as an expert poster for when you get out of training, Dalton? I expect you'll specialize in joint replacement therapy?

Hey Dalton
As far as your house in my wonderful town of Sierra Madre (suburb of LA) it would go for about $700,000. Maybe less in a different city as we are very unusual and know for our wonderful police force . I let my 13 and 15 year old hang out at nite with their friends and am pretty darn sure they will be safe and not get into any trouble.

Thank god i live in Canada :D,

Mine was Free :):), (Lucky because im only 20)

My bill was $37,500 for a total knee at the Mayo CLinic. So far all I have had to pay is $300.00. We have Blue Cross.
The knee is working real well and I am very pleased. It is almost 3 months now.
