Yesterday went and schedule my surgery date which is Aug. 31. Came home and was so sick to my stomach. I know this is the right thing to do ..... but it is so scary. I am the one that has polio on right leg and have to wear a full length brace. 5 Years ago I had to have surgery on my left leg to remove 12 staples that have been in the knee for about almost 40 or so years ago. They was starting to back out only 2 was backing out but the Dr. took them all out. But after having polio for 56 years my left leg has been taken all the work and it is completely shot. But I had such a bad experience with my knee surgery 5 years ago... I couldn't walk on the leg for about a month...finally I could at least put some weight on it after a month...but every since it has been just going down hill, with all the pain and the leg being so much weaker. I finally just couldn't take it any more and I went back to the Dr. (which is a different dr. from my first dr. 5 years ago) and I do have faith in this Dr. this is all he does is replace knee's so he knows what he is doing....but it sure is scareing me on having the surgery...but reading all what you guys are saying is helping me so much. Thanks sorry for being so long.

Hi oneleg (Jane from Ohio) Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have been through a lot! This is the place to be for support and answers. Hope that you will post often and get to know this wonderful group of people. Nancy

Hello Jane!
Much welcome to you! You really have a story to tell and believe me we are all interested in hearing your facts and happenings. We do care about your surgery and your history. Your post is not too long. It takes time to tell the particulars and the events so not to worry about that. Sometimes if you break it up into paragraphs it helps to read it.
Please post often, we'd love to get to know you before your surgery. As you know by now, our group includes just about everything imagineable as far as the issues are concerned. Its really good that you have such faith in your surgeon. May I ask how old you were when you were first diagnosed with polio? I take it that you've had to deal with this for a long time. Bless you heart. We're all praying for you and believe me, we're in there cheering that you have the best possible outcome!
Blessings always~

Hi Jane I think all you have been thru you will be so happy. I really do. Finally get some relief....I am very excited for you. You definitely deserve to have less pain. In the beginning do as you are told by your Dr and after a week or 2 you will really see a difference. Its hard work but it will be rewarding...Yea good Luck to you ask any questions, your not alone we have all been thru it....Good Luck...

It surely is a scary decision and after all that you have been through, it's understandable you should be anxious. But you'll be so much better afterwards. You'll get your life back! Think of that!

Welcome Jayne! We're ALL rooting for you! No, it's NOT easy surgery,,,,,but the benefits far outweigh any negatives! Just go in with a positive attitude! You'll have ALL the support you ever need right here! Best of luck!!! You'll do great!!!

Thanks for all the support. I am 58 years old. And I got polio on July 19, 1953. So I was only 2 years old when I got polio. So really I've never known anything else but the polio. But it wasn't so bad I still road a bicycle, play ball (was the pitcher), roller skated, square danced....had 2 children. Work full time until 2002, then I had to go
on complete disability.
Post Polio set in at that time. But as you can see I still had an active life and my good leg did all the work. And now I am paying the price for it. I use a power chair in the house and just the last year or so I've been in it more since my good leg is in so much pain and I can't stand on it for very long. And when I'm outside I'm in my scooter....but I still take care of my flower beds.
I pull the weeds sitting on my butt on a pillow (good sight to see) and scoot around on that...but I'm outside and I just so enjoy that.

So I'm hoping with the surgery that I will be able to stand on that leg longer than for just a little bit. And I am sure the pain will be gone...which will be a blessing.

And I am sure the first 3 months will be hard...but I've made it this far.
Any good suggestions that I should know...please feel me in on them
Thanks
Jane
