The hospital called today and I have a time set for surgery!! 10:30AM next Tuesday 4/21/09 (man, thats only 3 1/2 days away -- WOW). I am getting nervous a bit, but at the same time I am ready!! I am so sick of hurting! Sadly enough I am nervous about my families finances most of all, but it has to be done (my wife's orders)!! =)
I really like this forum and wish I would've found it earlier in my research of THA. Alas, I am glad that I have found it now. I will be a frequent poster "on the other side", as you guys have aptly put it!
I have one question that I have not found any posts about. When you came to after surgery how bad was the pain?? Previous hip surgeries that has been the worst pain I was ever in. Pain management is the scariest part for me...

Hey Tahoe! Just as we all recuperate at different rates, we all had different anesthesia,,,,,, I can only speak about myself! I had general anesthesia! When I woke up, NO PAIN!!!! NONE!!! Totally amazing! And the clear broth, crackers, and jello was the best meal! I was a VERY happy patient!!! :)!

Congratulations, Tahoe! Actually having a quick date is great....MUCH less time to get aprehensive. Good luck and we'll be thinking about you!!!

Best if luck to you! As for me, I woke up with no pain either. Once the pain meds starting wearing off, I would alert the nurse immediately. It's all about catching the pain before it starts again. I would wake up in the middle of the night at times in pain, but was quickly at ease.

P.s the best part of recovery is the relaxation and time off work. Right now I'm at a bench in the park reading and tanning!

Oh, Tahoe.....I guess it WASN'T quick! I misunderstood.....sorry! Even so, the time is right here now and that's a very good thing.

Well done - hope you'll be back and posting before you know it.

The pain after surgery was a pleasure to have, if you compare it to before surgery!

Congrats on your date, Tahoe! As others have said, everyone is different. I had a spinal for my surgery and woke up in no pain. In fact, I didn't even require narcotics for the 3 days I was in the hospital. I guess compared to the pain we all lived with before surgery, Hop is right - after surgery pain was a pleasure! (Well, almost, anyway!) We'll be waiting for you on the other side!

Tahoe, as others have said, immediate post-op pain is somewhat dependent on anesthesia. I had a spinal, which seems to be pretty common for THRs, so there was ZERO pain on awakening, and also none of the wooziness, nausea & other unpleasantness that can come with general anesthesia. (It also has the benefit of providing pain relief for 12-15 hours.) Of course, you have IV meds as well. Don't worry--the nurses will take good care of you! Good luck!

I had a spinal and woke up in no pain either. I only remember pain when I tried to move my 10,000pound leg. That was not the first evening though

My last day at work... it's getting real now!! I am starting to get a bit nervous, generally. I really like reading all the support and getting a good idea of what to expect. Thank you all!!! I'm also glad that that I am not the youngest person around here =)! Thank you for all your great information!

Nope, just a load of old bones & bionic parts!!! :)

I had a spinal with sedation. My experience waking up in the recovery room was rather pleasant. No pain at all. They came to take the post-op x-rays, then I had to wait for my room to be prepared. Once in my room, I had plenty of pain meds available to me. As the others have said, you just have to keep up with the pain meds before you get too uncomfortable. The night nurses were great about coming quickly to attend to nighttime doses.

I wish you the best of luck with your surgery next week. We will all await hearing from you afterwards. You will appreciate finally being on the healing side of things.

I just got home from my surgery, which was Thursday. I've had hip surgery twice before - once to put screws in to fix the broken hip and once to take the screws out. This replacement was better than both of those. I won't say it was painless, because mine wasn't truly minimally invasive, so I was cut on a good bit. I can say that while I still have discomfort I am extremely pleased with how I feel right now.

Any time you get cut on it's not going to be painless. You just have to manage expectations.

I am sorry you can't sleep! I remember before I went I did the same thing I am still only 2 wks out but much different (good) than before I had the surgery..Try tro relax think positive you will be fine......Good Luck in the morning will be praying for you ...

I couldn't sleep either. Don't worry -just think there is nothing you need to worry about. The doctors and nurses will take care of you. You just need to bring your hip! Can't wait to hear from you after surgery. GOOD LUCK! You will do great. Melissa -RTHR 3/17/09
