Hola Hippies,
Another 18 year old mind with a 46 year old body getting ready to join the ranks of the bionic hippies. I'm fully stoked about it!
Had a left, displaced femoral head fracture last August. My doc surgically repaired it with screw fixation. Three 3" screws have been holding my head on (femoral)for the last year. The fracture has somewhat healed, but compressed about an inch, shortening my leg. Still painful at the end of every day. My back & left knee have been affected too. And, necrosis is inevidable since the femoral head was fully displaced. It was just a matter of when.
Well, I finally got my doc to say the words I've been waiting for. "Maybe a THR is best." Hallelujah I said. I've done so much research on HR & THR over the past year, that I know it will be the best thing. My doc also suggested I have a specialist here in San Diego do it. I already had one in mind that I've researched. Well dang if he didn't suggest the doc I had in mind. I'm scheduled for surgery on Sept 28th. The time cannot go fast enough for me. I've been healing all this past year, so let cut out the old, and install the new, so I can heal fully and get back to the life style I'm acustom to.
They'll lengthen my leg back out also, which will be awesome. I'm getting a Depuy MoM, large ball THR. My size & as active as I am (or will be AGAIN), it looks like the best fit for me.
I have a brand new surfboard that I purchased last August 24th, the day after I fractured my hip, that is begging to be ridden. That and returning to backpacking, rock climbing, cycling (I'm doing that now), & skateboarding just a little:skp::D. (Did I mention that's how I broke my hip? :shk:) Kudos the young lady rollerblading agin! :thmb:
I promised myself I would ride that surfboard, & I will!!! Just not for a few more months now.
Either way, I'm very excited for the procedure. I've been on a couple forums but never this one. Super stoked I found it. I'll keep you posted on how things are going. This kind of message board is very good for alot of people. Mental healing is half the battle & can be very tough for some. It's nice to have a place like this to help one cope! I've learned that over the past year.
In closing, good luck to all of you out there. Mucho prayers & vibes to all of you!
@ Oldmarine, I hope your surgery went very well for you! Looking forward to your postings. We can heal up together. Thank you for your service to our country!

Hi, Plumber. So glad you decided to join the forum!

You certainly ARE pumped up about your new hip. It comes through in your post. Attitude is half the battle, so you are in great shape. And, it sounds like you've done your research on surgeons and have one you and your other doctor believe is the person for you. Fantastic!!!

We'll be here for any support you might need or if a specific question or two come up. Looking forward to hearing from you after surgery too.

Hey Plumber....Welcome.....Im a knee but I wish you the best of luck......W have all been thru it one way or another.......Please post anytime.....Keep that attitude that WILL get you far...Best wishes ....:)

Hola Plumber! You will not regret this one bit. Once the hurdles of initial recovery are done you will be so amazed at what you can do without pain! Go ahead and ask away if you have any questions. :D

Wow - you are pumped! Just a small word, don't get too fixated on that prosthesis. At the end of the day, they're all pretty much of a muchness what ever the websites say. Your most important choice is a really good surgeon and then go with whatever he prefers because that's what he's good at using. Trust me, you'll only know the difference down the line if things go wrong and I can promise you it won't be on account of the 'wrong' replacement having been used!

WElcome . Its good to hear someone so excited about a new part!!! Ilove my new hip it is definately worth getting excited about. You will be even happier than you are with it. I've done a lot of hiking on it . I get my one year since the last x-ray check next week to see how it has held up through my abuse!!!

Welcome, Plumber!!!! Looks like all your pain will be going down the drain! Sorry! But who could resist that! Keep that positive attitude!!! You'll be feeling Soooo happy before you know it!!! (:)0)

Welcome, my friend!! You found the right place and you have the right attitude! So, you can't go wrong. Can't wait to hear from you for the next month or so and "on the other side". You've done your research and made your choice. Now it's all over but the waiting! Can't wait to see pics of you riding that tasty barrel!!

OK, 4 more days and counting. Still just as amped as I was 6 weeks ago when I joined here. Monday the 28th @ 2pm, is the big day. Another September THR recipient. I've met my whole surgery team over the last couple weeks. Love them all. Having it done by Dr. Ball @ UCSD in La Jolla. Knowing he's done this procedure once or twice is a comforting feeling.
and like all here, I'll post up as soon as I can. The good doc said I should only be in the hospital about 48 hrs after surgery.
Hope to check in with all you fine people by Thursday next week.
Woo hoo, git'er done!
Tim
