Hi Folks,
I thought I might put a goal setting thread out....with all this talk of bike riding I would like to declare that my goal (after THR) is to ride a bike to the top of my street and back, to start, and then eventually over the harbour bridge....that will take a long time! Now of course I have to go slowly and not rush and allow myself to heaL ETC but its good to have a carrot in front of ourselves to keep us motivated.

Maybe you have a goal of your own that you would like to achieve?

Why not put it in print ...? And then boast when you have done it!

By the way has anyone ever seen the flylady.com site. Its all about house maintenance....some of their philosophies could apply to us....have a look, baby steps, and 15 minutes at a time come to my mind...a lot of what she says is trivial but maybe there is some logic in her ideas.

Stay happy
Rachel Mack

Morning Rachel!
Yes - I'm a member of the Flylady group! I'm a bit of neat/super-organised freak, so I LOVE her site! :)

My personal goal at the moment (good idea by the way...) is to lose the weight that I've managed to put on during several years of semi-inactivity due to constant pain and lack of being able to exercise! So far so good - I've managed to lose 3 kgs.
A driving factor with this is that the more weight I can lose - the less load on my poor unoperated right hip. And hopefully I can delay having to have it replaced this year. :)

Have a wonderful day - I'm going to!

Peta

Hi Rachel Mack! I am 16 weeks out from RTHR! Since I had bone on bone arthritis,, I just didn't even think hip replacement was something I would even need, being that I always worked out,was active, & took good care of myself! My ROM wasn't bad, since I did all my regular exercise albeit in pain!
When I was diagnosed with avascular necrosis,,,the term totally freaked me out,,,,bone death??? ME??,& I had 3 opinions before I felt comfortable enough to go through w the surgery, I just wanted to go through with it!
I just wanted to finally be able to walk without limping!
I just thank G-d that I have been building my strength & stamina!A little more every day!
My grandchildren (2yrs& 3 mos) just visited us for a week! I cried tears of joy to carry them, run after them& just not ACHE!
Ife is WONDERFUL again! I credit my wonderful hubby w working hard with me every singe day to get back on the top of my game! Of course he was like a Nurse Ratchett....but the results have truly been stellar!
Having been to Australia twice, I would love to join you on that ride over Harbour Bridge! I have no doubts at all that you will triumph. & cross it! With me, its just the simple things of everyday living that I'm enjoying to the fullest! I will NEVER take walking for granted again! Every day is a new adventure,,,I have bettered myself by striving & reaching for heights I never thought possible!
I've learned. To meet challenges both mentally & physically without being so frustrated that it would give up altogether!!
And athough I found this wonderful forum AFTER I had my surgery, its really been a wonderful source of information, laughs, and comraderie! I hope there are LOADS of wonderful success stories here! And that we meet our challenges and even exceed our own expectations! :)

My goal is to return to work, while I still have a job to return to.After over a 6 month recuperation,I hope that I can return there with little or no limp. Most of my coworker's have never seen me able to stand straight up.

Bless you, too,Peta! You are definitely one of my faveBonesmartie friends, for sure,& are a true inspiration! :)

Judles,

Should we say BBSFF (Best Bonesmart Friends Forever)?

Rachel,

I've no doubt you'll reach your goal of bike riding!

I had the luxury of taking a bike trip between my hip in Oct and this one in Feb. I managed maybe 20 miles in two days, all off-road, 4 months post-op. The hip felt great! Looking forward to Spring and especially Fall!

Here are some shots from my last, dreamy, pre-op Fall. . .

My goal is to complete the cathedral flag worship pilgrimage I started last year. Done two, ten more to go.

Great pix,Dave!!!
I kinda like that,,, BBSFF!!
Keep feeling good!! :)

Dave I want to see the landing on the second pic. Are you going straight down a rock face?
Judy

After my hip replacement I did fullfill my goal of getting to the top of my local mountain. I knew I was facing the knee scope next so I just wanted to get up by the steepest trail. Well I did that and the next weekend I went up a different way and a few weekends later I went up a third way. My stamina was totally awesome and hiking for 4 or 5 hours was totally doable.

Now after this back surgery and knee microfracture surgery, I just want to get my stamina back again for one, then get to the top of my mountain once again.

Judy

thanks Judles
OK another too short message. I'm glad the little message doesn't tell me they are too long

Hi Folks,
A few more things I would like to do to add to the list.
*pedal on the piano with my right foot
*go on a decent hike with my family
*pedal the sewing machine with my right foot, also use the Knee lifting gizmo to lift the sewing machine needle
*walk around Parramatta lake without pain afterwards
*walk Max the Labrador without fear of being pulled over
*be able to pick up the soap on the shower floor without having to do a contortionist act
*do up my shoe laces
*put on my socks easily- ish
*ditch the pillows either side of the bed
*walk up hill without using a small stride
*Go in the city to surf run (I'll walk!) ....about 14km
*Play on the floor with the kids
*Go on a picnic, without a chair...sit on the floor
*swim in the surf....not too rough
*swim 20 laps of an olympic pool. I used to be able to do 40
*Kick a soccer ball
Stay tuned for more goals
Ill have to print this off and tick them off as I achieve them....

Thanks for all the help guys
Rachel

Oh Peta, good job on the weight loss. Forget about that stupid "Biggest Loser" programme. It takes time to put the weight on, and time to take it off, and pain and lack of mobility and fear of causing pain and boredom and all that puts the pounds on. Take the flylady approach to exercise...a little bit ,by little bit, baby steps, consistency is the key every day just a little bit at a time....and maybe give yourself a tangible goal (and reward) for achieving your goal,so as to avoid that surgery....its really hard to be motivated to do something in order to avoid something else, whereas if you are doing something to achieve a tangible, measurable end, thats more satisfying. So maybe when you lose 5 kg you could reward yourself with something, and then 10kg, something else. What the reward is? maybe some new paints, or a trip to the art gallery, or some scrapbooking stuff or whatever, maybe you could go out for a special night with a loved one....whatever it is make it tangible, and something you wouldn't otherwise do. I'm lucky to have never had weight issues, but I do know that I achieve far more when I have something to aim for....Keep up the good work... Rachel

Thanks Rachel - I'm actually not dieting so much as trying to make "healthy choices". Diets have never worked for me - the minute I start one I turn into a raving lunatic! My family tell me I'm a much nicer person to live with when I'm NOT dieting. So I'm doing it the slow and steady way. I like the idea of a "reward" - I'm going to give that some serious thought! Perhaps some new shoes...............??? :)
Good list above by the way - there's a lot on there that I'm aiming for as well. Here's to us both getting there.......!

Peta :)

Rachel & Peta,,,,,,I don't see a thing in your lists about,,,chocolate,,,the ultimate "diet" reward/saboteur! :)

This is a great inspiring topic!
I have to give it some thought and outline my new goals. Right now, it would be like heaven to just be able to walk across a room without shocking pain. I can't even think any further advanced than that yet.....but maybe I should dare to dream too!

Great thread! My BTHR is scheduled for April 1, 2009 My Goals include playing basketball with my cousins at our 25th annual family reunion on the 1st or second week of August, and cracking 100 on the golf course at an annual High School gathering of friends in October. Since my wife may not let me play B-ball, I'll settle for the golf in October. I also want to get back on my delta trike and eventually my 2-wheeler bike and get on the many bike trails near my home. If I can get back into the gym and pool regularly within 3-4 months, that would be great. But all things in due time.
Tom

I'm Definitely betting on you,Tom! You are so psyched, I just know you will meet your goals! Just take it SLOW & gradually build up your strength! :)
