Hi
I am new to the group. I want to share my story in hope that you all can give me feedback. My first left knee replacement was done by a well renowned MD here in 2009. After 6 month I noticed that not only was I not gaining extension but the knee was inverted more. As it turned out it was 26 degrees Maligned. 2nd TkR left Knee revised Jan 2011, that the was a knee that did not bend after exhausting 75 visits of PT, oh did I mention the horrible pain, Third done a year ago in upcoming March. I have severe pain , a pocket of fluid that has been aspirated twice no infection. I have been able to stand on the knee over 10 min. Now the MD tells me yesterday that I can live in pain or let him go back in to balance my knee as it appears to have an imbalance!!! Where do I go from here at TKR number 4 of left knee?
Thanks
Annie

@amrn46 You will notice I moved your post to a recovery thread of your own. Please keep all your questions and updates on this thread so that we have a history in one place if we need to advise you.

Sounds to me like you need to get rid of that MD and find someone with a bit more compassion - not to mention skill. Well renowned or not, he has had 3 chances and you still are not feeling right. Find another surgeon that is not in any way connected to your current surgeon.

@amrn46, welcome to Bonesmart. As Jaycey said, find yourself a different OS. If the one you have hasn't done it right in 3 tries, why put your poor knee through another one of his attempts? You need a revision specialist, someone that knows how to fix problem knees.

Also, please tell us the dates of all your procedures so we can add them to your signature. That way it will be easy to see what you have been through and how to advise you.

I want to thank each of you. The first surgery was Jan 09, failed due to alignment. The second surgery Dec 2011 failed due placement of Zimmer product as femoral component leaving vanguard product as Tibia component. The most recent surgery was March 2017. The lateral pocket appeared at 2 months postoperative. The MD indicated that X-rays were normal and it should resolve. Now 10 months postoperative, unreal pain , swelling,he states X-ray shows an imbalance. I have not been able to return to work due to pain and instability. I am 59 years of age.
Did I mention that I have a long career in healthcare that has now been on hold for a year.
I live in North Carolina.

I will tag @Jamie to see if she can help to locate a good revision OS in North Carolina. You need to see someone that has no affiliation at all with your current doctor. Please keep coming back to us. We will help you as much as we can!

Thank you , I will post updates. I live in the Triad area so my MD is affiliated with all three hospitals . I fear loss of limb with all these failed surgeries. I am otherwise healthy.

amrn46,
Sorry to hear you have been through so much with your knee, I agree with the others it is time to find another surgeon.
Recommend you seek another opinion for your TKR, from a surgeon specializing in Revisions, they have the education and background to determine what is happening with troubled knees. Look for a surgeon specializing in complex joint reconstruction or revisions. They should have NO relationship with your present OS, not even golf buddies.

Our forum nurse/director is out until next week, she will be along then to advise further.

I fear loss of limb with all these failed surgeries.
Pretty much you can have as many revisions as you will allow.

Jamie will be able to steer you towards some surgeons with advanced training and experience with revisions. You can also try the find a surgeon link at the top of the page.

If you click on the yellow revision banner in the the Knee Recovery forum, a list of members with revisions will pop up.

Please post your exact surgery dates, having the exact dates will help us better advise you! Thanks

You will probably have to go out of your area to find a surgeon with no affiliations with your current surgeon.

You do need someone who specializes in problem knees and who will look at your knee with new eyes, uninfluenced by the opinions of your current surgeon.

It's most unlikely that you will lose your leg. A competent surgeon will be able to correct your knee.
For goodness' sake, don't let your current surgeon within 100 miles of your knee. He's had three chances and he's still not got it right.

I don't know what the "triad area" is. Can you give me the name of your city please? And....if you could provide the name of your surgeon, I'd also appreciate that as I want to be sure to steer clear of any of his surgeon buddies when hunting for a good revision surgeon for you. It's better for you to have a truly independent opinion with the next doctor you see.

I'm so sorry you've been through all this, but don't worry....a good revision surgeon can make all the difference in the world. Don't even let yourself go down that road of amputation. There is much to be done before something like that would be considered.

Please tag me when you reply with your city and surgeon's name so that I see it quickly.

@Jamie ,
I am sorry I live in the Raleigh NC

Jamie needs the name of your surgeon so she'll make sure to stay away from him or any of his 'buddies'.

Yes, I would like that if you want me to help you find another doctor to see. I don't think you should return to the same surgeon who has not done a good job for you so far. That would be risky. You need a really good revision surgeon.

@amrn46 I live in the triad area of NC also, small world. I’m sorry to hear about the problems with your knees. Please don’t give up. There are competent surgeons in this area. My surgeon did an excellent job on my left knee last July, and I’m trusting him to do my right knee in 3 days! He was the third surgeon that I saw before deciding he was the correct one. I have extremely knock knees and severe metal allergies, he spent countless hours of research trying to find the correct implant for me. I don’t know if he specializes in revisions or not.

Hi
I have been trying to get a revision specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Do you know of any? I am trying to leave N.C. for this due to my work affiliations .

It's OK to name surgeons on here. You don't need to resort to emails.

Great, I am new to the forum. Is your Dr. Bolenesi or Dr Benedict?

First Dr Benedict TKR
Second Dr Springer TKR Revision
Third. Dr Vaughn TKR Revision
Just don’t know where to go now, healthy otherwise but now told balance is off in knee.
Please advise !
