Need information concerning a GIRDLESTONE procedure. I have had four hip replacements and now have an infection that is causing massive swelling in the groin and the hip (doubled in size). The doctors say that to fight the infection the metal must come out, with no replacement possible. My body has been able to keep the infection in check and I am not sick but the infection has open a boil-like open on my incision that was draining for eight (8) weeks. There are signs that additional openings will happen at any time. the question I have is "Should I have the procedure while I am still healthy and the infection is under control or should I wait until the infection takes over and the procedure must be done?" Thank you for your opinions.

@patient 510 Welcome to BoneSmart!

First question, you say you have had 4 THRs. Were you on antibiotics before they did each replacement?

Has the surgeon suggested a two phased revision? By this I mean removing the implant and replacing it with a spacer packed with antibiotics. Then when the infection is confirmed clear, installing a new implant.

Is your surgeon working along side an infection control specialist?

In answer to your question, no you should not wait until the infection takes over. This needs to be addressed as soon as possible. I just wonder why your surgeon has only given you one option.

The bone mass in the pelvic area and the femur mass will not support any more in-plants due to bone loss. I have never had an infection problem with my other replacements, only this one. I see both the surgeon and an infection disease specialist at the same appointment. I had a second opinion from Johns Hopkins and the results were the same, the only option is the Girdlestone Procedure.
