Just wondering if there is someone out there that can answer a non knee question.

In September I fractured the 5th metatarsal bone in the foot. I was in a walking boot for 9 weeks. In Nov. the doctor said things were looking good and the fracture line was fading. I was still having some pain so I went back to check with him before the BTKR. Seems like the base of the fracture has not healed and since it has not changed for 5 moths he is calling it a nonunion fracture. We are going to try a bone stimulator without immobilization as I need to exercise for surgery. The other option is for the orthopedists to insert a screw when he gets done with the knees.

My question is, if he does put in the screw will that require one to be non-weight bearing on the foot? If that is the case, I will just wait it out.

Thanks

Simon

There will most likely be a period of NWB, Simon, in order to let the fracture heal. As a rule what they do with a non-union, is to scuff up the broken ends of the bone to get rid of the abnormal or scar tissue that will have grown over the area. Obviously, this then recreates the fracture as it was when newly done and since this is now a secondary healing, not a primary, then everything must be done to ensure nothing hinders the union this time. Screw notwithstanding, I would think this will include NWB.

Simon I pulled all the toes out of the ball of my foot so all my toes are screwed in you will be nwb for a few weeks to let the screw settle in and get the fracture fixed I have 5 screws and 1 plate in my foot
good luck with both
hugs to you c

Simon,
Since my response was deleted... call your doc, he's just a phone call away and can have this sort of question answered in 5 minutes -- chances are there will be only a few days of NWB, BUT that may be more acceptable than having an additional surgery. Personally, I would rather have it done all at once than face 2 or 3 surgeries. You'll have the advantage of better pain control as well.
