I don't see how on earth someone could perch themselves on a bed pan with a newly operated leg! Seems it would be difficult even if nothing hurts.

I did it once or twice with my bilaterals. Nurses assistant (mean and angry), yelled who took out my foley. When my foley was taken out, when I tinkled, it went straight up in the air, therefore, I kept wetting the bed.

Therefore, after that, i just held it until I had a good helper to the bathroom.

I have my hospital survey. I haven't mailed it in. I figure my survey will be marked and the bills are just rolling in. Am I that paranoid? A little.

:hissy:

I had one for the first four days and I never noticed it was even there. The only time I felt "full" was when the receptacle itself was full (and they only let it get full that one time- otherwise they did a good job keeping it un-full).

On the fourth day, they removed it and I "walked" to the bathroom for the first time. The worst part of that walk was the ugly yellow slipper-socks they forced me to wear. I hated those things.

:DBoy, Terri! You must be more confused than ever! Cuz you know sooo much!!:pnc::hissy::rant:

I love having one as well. With my last back surgery when i was in so much pain my doc told me one day he was having it taken out. I begged him to leave it in one more day, I was glad he did.
Go for it

With all this "foley praise" I almost want one now! Imagine sleeping through the night without having to wake up to go to the loo. hehehe

I, too, loved my catheter and did not want it removed. I have only had one three times--hysterectomy and both knees. It is wonderful not to have to go to the bathroom for those first couple days.

I had surgery this week. The doctors at my hospital do not seem to use catethers for knee replacements. I guess it's because the have you up the day after surgery. I overheard the nurses talking about a woman who was insisting on having one because she didn't want to use the bed pan. They were not sympathetic. I asked the nurse about it and she using the bed pan reduces the chances of a UTI. I didn't care for the bed pan, but it was only for a day.

Catheters most surely do cause UTIs. Is well documented.

I think I would change my opinion if I ever had one give me a UTI. I haven't, so I loved the convenience. It is nerve wracking in these days of understaffing to wait for someone to help you get your leg out of the bed and back into it.

Catheters are no biggy. For my knee replacements, I had one in for the first 24 hours each time. This, to me, was especially important with local anesthesia since you won't have control of your bladder until it wears off several hours later.

I got into this need for joint replacements as a result of a car accident 20+ years ago. At that time, I had a catheter in for nearly 6 weeks. Also had IVs for the same duration and a feeding tube for about 4 weeks. I was a little unsure that I would remember how to urinate on my own after that but everything worked just fine.

I would do the cath/foley yes you really dont feel like getting up right away and after all that IV fluid i feel like i was asking for that pan every 15 mins...lol

Me too! And I got retention. At that point I was begging for a catheter!

I was just thinking about this this morning. I am a frequent pottier. If I even think about it, I have to go. I am really worried about trying to go all of the time after surgery, so I am glad I will have a catheter for a while.
I also have the fun complication of needing to pass a medium sized kidney stone right now, I am sure that when they start my IV fluids it will push it right along!

So, I for one will probably be thankful for my catheter. Remind me that I said that, ok???

Will do!

A thought - your OS does know about your kidney stone, doesn't he?
