For those of you that had a foley in post-op, did you feel like you had to "go" all the time? As a nurse I am always telling patients "just let it go, you have a tube in."

I am so on the fence about having one. I know it's a source of infection, but I also think, wow, I don't have to get up to pee, LOL.

I'd go with it, Terri! I never even had the choice....I woke up, and it was just "there!" I was glad I wasn't forced to go to the bathroom right after surgery!

Yeah, I am NOT going to be in a rush to get up.

I didnt have one. Wish I did. I didnt want to get up either ....( so if you can i surely would.......(....good luck to ya!!!!!!!!!

I had one and it was wonderful. I never felt like I had to go, since the bladder stayed empty. It would have taken me so long to walk into my bathroom that I would have had to plan ahead by 20 minutes lol. They were going to take it out that night, but I was disappointed so they nurses said they could overlook the order till the early a.m. nurses came on. They didn't want to keep coming in to help me to the bathroom, I'm sure. So we were all happy hahaha

I had a catheter put in once in the doctor's office to get a specimen and it didn't hurt one bit. I always thought it would be very painful to have one put in. I guess it's a different story for guys lol.

I am definately requesting a foley. (Note to self, schedule bikini wax)

I was told I'ts because a small baloon is inflated in the bladder at
the end to keep it in. I't gives you that full feeling.

I am all for the foley. Just wish they could keep it in longer. I say go for it.

Yep, I'm on the side of getting one. They put it in when you're sound asleep and removing it is nothing. You're still on the good pain meds when it comes out, so you really don't give a hoot anyway. Not having to worry about using the bedpan or getting to the bathroom is wonderful.

Ah, but us ladies have ones with a much smaller balloon that you guys! Makes all the difference!

But I agree with you, bunny. How often patients have woken up with that odd feeling which they interpret as 'needing to go' but is, in fact, the presence of the tube in the urethra which is alien and the brain makes of it what it can.

One theatre (OR) I had charge of had a small list for cystoscopies which were done with no anaesthetic! The men got an anaesthetic gel but the ladies got nothing! We used rigid steel scopes then. He'd say to the ladies "Just relax - this will be nothing worse than having sex!" I'd say "and how the heck would you know!" Worst event was when he said it to one aging lady and I had to whisper in his ear that she was a nun!

Oh Josephine, how funny! To my surprise, I did not have one with my last knee and I certainly hated the bed pan.

I said no because I wanted a reason to start getting up and about. I was determined
not to let the surgery slow me. I had plenty of arguments with the nurses about getting up. the worst was about having a bath before my first official PT. I had called 4 hours before PT and requested help and was told someone would be here soon 1 hour before I called and was told that there was no shower tech on duty and I would have to wait. I told the nurse I did not need a tech and all I needed was help in and out and I could do the rest. About 45 minutes later someone showed up and I had already done it myself, needless to say the rest of my stay when I requested help they came running.

A shower tech? What the heck is that? The only one I ever shower with is my husband, LOL.

I dread to think! Sounds like the same kind of idiocy that Dawnie had when she wanted her ice bucket refilled - the nurses said only the PTs could do that and there wasn't one on the ward so she had to wait! I mean - how hard is it to put water and ice in a bucket and screw on the lid?

So much for "man"ual labor!!!:hehe::hehe:
:thmb:

When I woke up I had the Foley and they were pushing a lot of fluids through the IV. When I got to the room they let me have a liquid only meal. I can't imagine how often I would have had to go without the Foley, although even when the take the Foley out men have the advantage of being able to use the plastic urinal bottle rather than trekking to the bathroom. I still thought the Foley was no big deal.

Why is it men get the advantages? I think they should make the men trek off to the bathroom too. Gives them a chance to work the new knee(s).:hehe: :thmb:
