First day of PT after complaint on employee

I just hope I'm not slowing down my progress by not letting them "push" me a little farther. But I am enjoying the appointments with very little pain.... I'm pretty sore afterwards though. I guess because I do ALOT of those exercises. So my quad is really sore and that kind of messes up my whole leg. Also the extension exercises make my muscles in the lower thigh and upper calf in the back) really hurt because the muscles are stretched SO far. So I stay kind of stiff. As much as I hate to, I need to get out of the house today and just walk around somewhere..at least a little bit. When I do that I tend to over-do it, but I don't think that's gonna be a problem today!

You're gonna hear all kinds of stories! It's very interesting! Most people love to tell their surgery stories, and truthfully, most of us love hearing them!! It's fun to compare stories--just like we do here.

Oh--brs0660, I ride the bike too. I forgot about that. They have me do that first thing when I get there to kind of warm up the knee a bit. They set if for 10 minutes. About the first 3 minutes I can't get it to go all the way around because it's just too stiff. But after that I can get it to go all the way around. It really does help loosen it up.

Beth you are not slowing down your progress by not having them "push". I have never had a PT that pushed or pulled and I have excellant ROM 125 last time it was measured. Just doing your exercises faithfully, and riding the bike, that's all I did. Also my PT always said the best exercise is movement. Keep moving, don't give the knee time to get stiff, then the pain & swelling returns. Take care and good luck!!

They have me do so many exercises for my quads and hamstrings that my muscles are sore ALL the time. It seems to keep me from wanting to do other things that involve moving. I guess I already said that..I put some heat on my leg in the back where the muscles hurt this morning. Nothing really seems to make them feel better.

I AM glad that the pushing and pulling is over though!!

Mine were to take your meds before you go and ice after .so sorry those muscles are something else..........get better Beth but take it easy push a lil but you shouldn't have to scream............)

I had such a bad day yesterday. All kinds of things. I figured out some of my physical problems are probably the new pills I was put on--blood pressure pills. I am EXTRA tired, depressed, slighty nauseous, and the term that fits it all is MALAISE.

So I haven't wanted to even get out of my recliner. Yesterday afternoon I started massaging my scar, got on my bike for a little while and really loosened up my knee. It felt better the rest of the day. I iced it a couple of times too. I even iced my other knee because there is a muscle or something in that knee that hurts with flexion--like on the bike.

I felt better all over after I did all that, and I had been feeling terrible all weekend.

I do worry a bit about my extension, because I have had a couple of times that it felt like my knee kind of wanted to "buckle" and I started thinking about it, and I think it's because it doesn't straighten out enough.

I'm having some problems with the extension, and hurts so bad when I force it a little.

Beth, try taking you BP meds at night. Alot of the drugs, called beta blockers make you tired so we tell the patients to take them at night and enjoy the sleep.

Beth, there is a really good exercise (well, a passive one...not much "exercise" to it) for extension.

Lie on your tummy on your bed so that the bottom of your legs from just above the knee joint down are suspended beyond the edge of the bed. The weight of your legs stretches your knee to give more extension. Start with a minute or two and work up to 10 minutes. Then start adding ankle weights (I use the type you can get at Walmart that let you add from 1 to 5 pounds) and gradually work the time back up to 10 minutes each time you add weight.

I like that Jamie! It's upside down from what I usually do, and it lets your body decide how hard you do it. Plus the weights added later. I will definitely try that. I need more extension.

Terri--I am supposed to take my pain meds morning and night. Do I dare take them all at once?

Beth I was talking about your BP meds! And ONLY if they are once a day meds.

Beth.....I'm such a NON-exercise nut, I really liked that routine too. I used to just fall asleep in that position....:hehe:

Uh....yeah I know you were talking about my BP meds. That's why I was letting you know that they were twice a day, not once a day.

Ding-ding-ding- I hear a drug question calling my name. Your friendly neighborhood pharmacist checking in here.
To answer your question without knowing your specific meds, yes, you can take pain meds and bp meds together. They should not interfere with each other.
HOWEVER, until you know how a new med may effect you, you may want to separate it by time so that you can see it's full effect on you.
Now, what Terri is saying is that if your bp med is making you sleepy, especially a beta blocker, take it at bedtime. You will sleep through the worst of the effects, and you will have the most medicine "on board" in the morning when it is most needed. Most heart attacks happen in the morning.

After all of that, we do not know what specific medicines you are taking, and do not want to interfere with your doctor's advice.

Well, I don't , but that Terri seems to be a trouble maker. :p

Feel better, we are thinking of you! Kimberly

My meds that I got from the cardiologist are Flecainide and Metoprolol. I'm not really worried about them interfering w/my pain meds. Terri had suggested that I take them at night because they can make me sleepy, but my cardiologist has me taking one of each in the morning, and one of each at night.

That was what I was wondering about......since they are split up morning/evening, I can't take all four pills at once.....(just the cardiac meds)

Well, if they are making you tired, you might speak to your cardiologist about either changing the dosage or the drug itself. There are many, many choices for blood pressure medicine and you don't want to have to deal with negative side effects.

Yeah, that's on my LIST OF DOCTORS TO MAKE APPOINTMENTS WITH. Geeeeezzz...this gets old, huh?

Have faith, Beth....it gets old...but then it gets BETTER!!!

Hi Beth Just sayin' Hi, I too am on Metoprolol 50mg Twice daily, and have not noticed any side affects. I asked my OS about It before Surgery and he said It's fine to
take even with the Cumaden. I hope your doing well and have a great day,
Best Wishes,

Beth, the metoprolol is notorious for making pts feel sleepy and lethargic. When you see you cardiologist, make sure you tell him how you are feeling. Ther is an extended release formula of metoprolol called Toprol XL, that might work better for you, esp if you take it at night.
Do you take your pulse measurement? Both of those drugs work to slow your heart rate down and malaise is a symptom of that. So be sure to get that checked out.
And by all means, have a great day!
