Does anyone have any experience in selecting a rehab center after bilateral knee replacement? I live alone with all relatives out of state and I live in a rural area so going home right after is questionable. We do have good home health care up here but for the first few weeks I don't think that will be enough. Our local rehab center is also the nursing home. They don't seem to have a strong rehab program. I did find one rehab center (Genesis Health Care) that is close to the hospital (which is about 80 miles from where I live) that has a Progression Rehab Unit for adult short term, post surgical rehab. I will check with the doctor but thought I would see if anyone had any experience in this area.

Several people that I know had to go to their local nursing home....they were put in a different wing, of course and had a great rehab. You might have to consider that. Your Dr. will be able to answer ALL of those questions....they deal with it every day.

Good Luck with your surgery and rehab!!! Ask ANY questions - we have an answer or three!!! Josephine will take EXCELLENT care of you!!

FYI! I had BTKR on 11/26/07. My doctor indicated to me that I would be able to go home. He was wrong. I was fortunate enough to have my mother right next door to me, and I stayed at her house for 3 weeks. In hind sight, I truly do NOT think I would have been able to manage at home, even with the help of my husband and son. When I did go home after 3 weeks, I still needed a lot of help. Just thought I'd throw in my 2 ¢ in!

I agree, ask DR. They usually have ones they like the results from and know who is more aggressive based on your ages and so on. Myself at 40's wants more than my grandmother at 90 maybe. Go visit and pick 2 incase first choice one is fully booked

My friends either went to a place they were familiar with or went with recommendations from friends. Good luck! I had all my family home since it was during Christmas break, but if they had not been around I would have gone somewhere for at least a week or so. It is challenging to get used to getting around and doing the exercise, etc. I'll be thinking of you and pray that you find an excellent place that provides outstanding care and therapy.

God bless,
Skeet
