Hi! I am new here and have some questions. I fell and fractured my left femur on Dec.16. I spend a week in the hospital and a month in rehab. I am now home but still non weight baring on that leg. I also have a knee and hip replacement on that same leg which complicates things. During mu surgery I had several screws and a plate put in to stabilize the fracture. Is it normal to have pain as the bones heal? Will I need to get some or all of the hardware taken out or will it always be in my leg?

Hi and welcome to Bone smart! I fell and broke my femur a year ago this coming February. I still have the pins in and am not planning on taking them out. It’s been a long recovery and am just starting to feel like myself again. I started swimming and doing Pilates privately just a few weeks ago. You will find lots of information on this site and lots more of support as you go through your recovery. Try to rest and ice and take your meds as directed. Don’t try to rush your recovery. We’ve all done that and suffered the consequences. Best wishes.

:welome:to the Forum. I am really sorry about your fall, and I'm sure it was extra scary knowing it was your left leg that had all that work done.

Would you mind sharing the dates of your THR and TKR?
During mu surgery I had several screws and a plate put in to stabilize the fracture. Is it normal to have pain as the bones heal?
There was a lot of soft tissue disturbed when you had this surgery, and Im sure it is painful... I hope you are taking your pain medication and icing regularly.
Inflammation certainly increases pain and Icing is a great help.:ice:

Will I need to get some or all of the hardware taken out or will it always be in my leg?
This is certainly a question to confirm with your surgeon but these are most likely designed to be permanent.
As much as you have enough "hardware" in that poor left leg, you would not want to have another surgery to remove.

I can imagine the weight bearing restrictions must be frustrating but All Temporary.
Our patience muscle often gets the biggest work-out.:groan:

LOTS of great advice and support here, as Snoopy55 said...and we are rooting for you.

Welcome and here's hoping for a good recovery, just take a chill pill and relax, the first few weeks can be challenging mentally and physically.
But we've all done it so if you have any questions, ask away, we are here!
We all recover at different rates so just don't compare your recovery with anyone else's.
All my best!
