I had LTHR on September 16, 2008 and will have RTHR in near future. I would like some feedback related to experiences anyone was had with having both hips replaced.

Thanks

The only 'problem' I can see is having double the relief!

Are you concerned about something in particular?

Hi: I had same day bilateral hip resurfacing in April of 2006. I had no problems - stayed in the hospital three days and went home to a two storey house. I could get up and down stairs without difficulty (the occupational therapist made sure I could do that before I was released from the hospital) and required no special equipment other than a dressing stick and a "grabber". I used a walker for about 10 days, and then switched to a cane which I used for another 2 1/2 weeks and then I used no walking aids. I was cleared to drive, start out patient physical therapy and water exercise at 18 days. I went back to the ballet studio to begin teaching a modified schedule of ballet and pilates classes and began dance rehab at one month post op.

If both hips need to be repaired, I say go for it. I wish you the very best of luck and continued good health and a speedy return to an active life again, after both hips are "good as new"!

Take good care,

I haven't had both replaced, only my right, but know if I needed my left hip done as well I'd do it in a heartbeat. I have my life back with quality. What a miracle!!!!

Sept 22 was the date of my second THR, the other was 10 weeks prior. The main difference is that you will now know most of the parameters of the whole process...what you can and cannot do, what the pain can be like, moving around the house, sleeping, how long til you walk without crutches. Everything of course is subject to variations but the fear of the unknown going into the first go round will be gone. Good luck.

I had LTHR on March 7, 2008 and RTHR on June 20, 2008. I probably could have done the second one a few weeks earlier, but waited longer so I could attend a couple weddings. The gating issues were primarily being off Coumadin for at least a couple weeks after the first surgery and having the first hip strong enough for me to do stairs just using that leg. I did feel like a veteran going through the process the second time. Things were very similar to the first time, but there were some minor variations in recovery - I could do some things easier/sooner the second time while some other things seemed to take a little longer. The OS said that was all quite normal.
Good Luck,
Doug
