As I have been posting with my progress..today in the mail I received a notice to take an FCE test. My TKR was on April 29th. My intentions have been to go back to work. I am sorry I originally posted this comment in the wrong discussion board. According to the notice the test takes four hours. My only concern is the kneeling and crawling on a hard surface.

At 11 months post op, I can and have knelt on a hardwood floor. I have crawled a few feet...didn't like it one bit. It's not that I worry about damaging the knee. It just feels...wierd..Never heard of that test but best of luck with it.

Worker's comp? I had to take one years ago after a more minor surgery on my right knee. My TKR is the left one (I switched bad knees over the years). It actually wasn't too bad. They'll put you through the paces, just give it your best try. Let them know if something is painful. They'll rate how long you can be on your feet, various work tasks you can or can't do, etc. Then they'll make the decision about the percentage of permanent disability you might have. My right work-related knee was rated at 40% partial permanent disability of the entire leg. I received a settlement, still work at the same company.

That 40% disabled knee got me through my TKR on the other knee. But now it's fussing more. Don't worry so much about the FCE -- just make your best honest effort and make sure if you might need work restrictions, you get them.

FCE is a Functional Capacity Evaluation. It is used to see what parts of your job you can do. From the results a good PT can suggest equipment or movement modifications that will make it easier for you to do your job.

I can kneel but its not particularly comfortable. For working around the house, however,
I bought a pair of mid-end workers knee pads at the local Lowes. (You know the kind
that are marketed to brickworkers, tile layers, etc.) They make kneeling unremarkable.

No worries, RD. I deleted the other one for you.

I'll keep everyone posted. The test is scheduled for December 23rd...they tell me it takes 3 to 4 hours. I'm looking to go back to my job as a police officer.
