I am new to this site and appreciate reading the info & experiences available here. I am scheduled for a TKR 1/29. I need make some travel plans if feasible. Although each individual's recovery seems very different, I wonder if it is realistic to plan to travel by car with family 7 weeks later for a mini-vacation, or to travel by myself to NYC 9 weeks later for a week?

I flew to Las Vegas 11 weeks after surgery and walked miles once there. However, at 7 or even 9 weeks after surgery, I was in no way in any condition to take a road trip as a passenger, much less to drive. It was difficult to sit still and be comfortable with the knee pain. The 3 hr. plane ride and having to sit and be confined was a pain.

I wouldn't recommend it. Bit too early, in my opinion.

Maybe after 3 months.

Tex, I am 10 weeks post right TKR, and I am just getting ready to start traveling again. I have been able to do a little walking around my neighborhood, at the park, etc. However, it is usually followed by increased swelling and pain. So I am not yet ready to walk around as a tourist, seeing the sights.

In about a week, I'm going to fly from Seattle to Minneapolis to spend some time with my sister, who had a TKR more recently than I did. She probably won't need a lot of caretaking by the time I get there, but I'm not sure whether she'll be driving yet, so I may be of some help. But this is a trip to just sit around and chat and play Scrabble and go visit our mom in assisted living, not to go out and see the sights.

In mid-February, which will be 4 months after my surgery, I'm going to walk all over San Francisco, seeing everything!

Best of luck with your surgery!

Sue

Tex,

I am just eight weeks post-op from a double TKR, and I am back at school teaching. But, I am stiff and, at times, a little sore---and I should have a "Slow-moving vehicle triangle" on my back. I just was able to drive two weeks ago, so I have been to the mall and to the grocery store. A longtrip---I don't think so right now. SOemthing else to consider---I guarantee yo that you will have difficulty sleeping atnight for some time---that is absolutely normal. I would postpone it until you can truly enjoy it.

Just my two cents,

Tim C.
