Has anyone used a foot peddler 4 weeks post hip replacement. My physical therapist vetoed an exercise bike, but I was gifted a floor peddler and hoping that would not break any 90 degree rules. Thoughts? I will follow up with my therapist and surgeon on Monday. Thanks for any input..

@Syd400 Welcome to BoneSmart! Can you tell us your surgery date and which hip. We will put the information in a signature for you.

I would not use any type of gym equipment until after your post surgery followup appointment. Four weeks is very early for a new hip. The best exercise at this point is walking - an not to excess.

Here's a bit of information for you. Lots of tips based on the experience of thousands of BoneSmart members.

Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of this BoneSmart philosophy for sensible post op therapy
5. Here is a week-by-week guide for Activity progression for THRs

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery.

While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

Never did any pedaling, just walking seems to do the trick. I think they use the pedal deal for knee replacements sometimes. Didn't use any physical therapists either.

I used my recumbent exercise bike with the seat all the way back so I did not break the 90 degree rule and no tension on the pedals just for the movement. I started with really short time of about 5m and then very slowly added to the time once I knew how my hip would react. I enjoyed it and my in home PT approved as it was very easy to get on and off so safe and I did not break my precautions.

Hello @Syd400 - and :welome:

Please will you tell us the full date of your hip replacement and which hip it is, so we can make a signature for you? Knowing the exact date will help us to advise you appropriately in the future.
Thank you.

My left hip was reaplaced on August 30th 2020.

Happy One Month Anniversary!
How is your recovery coming along? We’d love to hear about the progress you’re making when you have the time. Hope to hear from you soon.
